Savannah Marshall confirms Claressa Shields rematch just days after Natasha Jonas 'mega event' was eyed

Savannah Marshall has revealed she has activated a clause to take on Claressa Shields in a rematch.

The move comes just days after Shields and her team expressed their desire to fight Natasha Jonas next year. Shields regained her status as the undisputed middleweight champion with a masterful points win over Marshall in October.

But speaking on Soccer AM on Saturday morning, Marshall not only confirmed she has activated her rematch clause, but that there are plans to hold the rematch at St James' Park.

"I've activated the rematch clause,” she said. “I know Sky are really keen - and BOXXER - to get a rematch at St James' Park in the summer... it'd be in the summer so it doesn't clash with the football season."

Speaking on behalf of Shields, her promoter, Dmitriy Salita, just this week welcomed a massive world title fight against Jonas early next year.

He said: "Our goal has always been to make the biggest fights. The Jonas fight would be another mega event for women's sport. We want the fight and are very keen on making it happen early next year."

Jonas claimed her third world title in 10 months after she beat Marie-Eve Dicaire at the AO Arena in Manchester last month.

The 38-year-old’s rampant run began in February, when she moved up three weight classes to knock out Chris Namus to become the WBO super-welterweight champion.

The former Team GB fighter then added the WBC strap to her collection when she beat Patricia Berghult on points on her return to Liverpool.

Katie Taylor, Terri Harper and Shields have all been mentioned as possible opponents for Jonas to face next year.

And when asked who is going to be next, Jonas recently revealed: "We are just waiting to get everything on the table to see which [option] is the best one for me. I'll make the best decision for me."

Before she added: "There's no pressure on me, all the pressure's on Katie or Claressa. And I can say I've been in with the top two and I can choose who the GWOAT [Greatest Woman of All-Time] is!

"It's no secret that I'm not a big 154lbs. So I definitely wouldn't be going up to 160lbs. She [Shields] has made 154lbs. She has said that she would come back down and she wants the Ring belt title back.

"That's one of the more fruitful options. She's a very good champion. We've seen her against Savannah [Marshall] in a brilliant fight and probably one of her career-best performances in my opinion. But I'm not Savannah."
