Sarah Michelle Gellar has her chosen one for the ‘Buffy’ reboot

Sunnydale has a new slayer! The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot has found its chosen one in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew star Ryan Kiera Armstrong! Sarah Michelle Gellar broke the news to the young star in an adorably emotional video.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer began back in 1997 with Gellar as Buffy Summers, a girlie vampire slayer who never let her power as the chosen one stop her from doing to school dances and being her bubbly self. She was a badass and a character that many still love. Now Gellar is leading the charge on a new series, with Chloé Zhao directing the pilot and Poker Face scribes Nora and Lilla Zuckerman bringing the series to life. Gellar has now found her new slayer and it is going to be great!

Armstrong, who played Fern in Skeleton Crew, has an ability as a young actress to get you on her side. It is why I loved Fern and why I will most definitely love her take on a slayer. In a release from Deadline, Gellar shared her excitement having Armstrong as part of the cast.

“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side,” she said. “To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.”

Lilla and Nora Zuckerman went on to praise Armstrong’s casting as well. “We are so overjoyed to have found this generation’s slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one,” they said.

We also got an adorable video of Gellar asking Armstrong to be her slayer!

Buffy for a new generation

I was late to the Buffy game but I saw what the original series did for women everywhere. So many loved seeing Gellar kick ass as the slayer and it made many of my friends find a love of vampire stories. Watching the series as an adult, I knew that I would have made this show my entire personality if I’d watched it as it aired (I was the vampire person in my family so I don’t blame them!).

But with the new series, it isn’t just a return to the world of Buffy Summers. It’s a way for an entirely new generation to find their power and their strength as many millennials did in the 90s and early 00s. And that’s incredibly exciting to me! Shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer were weird, funny, and important. For a new generation to have that is what makes these reboots so special.

I cannot wait to see what Gellar, Armstrong, Zhao, and the Zuckermans have in store but it is going to be something epic.
