Sarah Beeny reveals she has cancer - and her sons have cut her hair before chemo

Sarah Beeny has revealed she has breast cancer and is currently undergoing treatment against the disease.

The presenter and property expert, 50, is best known for her work on property programmes, including Help! My House Is Falling Down and Sarah Beeny's New Life In The Country.

She announced she is fighting the disease through a course of chemotherapy, which she started last week and will also start a course of radiotherapy in the new year.

The star admitted she had "a little bit of a breakdown" after receiving the news in a hospital consultation room and has vowed not to lie to her kids about her diagnosis.

The presenter has four children with her artist husband Graham Swift, who she married in 2003.

Speaking of her diagnosis and support team, Sarah told the Telegraph: "I'm lucky because I live in a family where we all talk."

She told how her son had asked if she was ok before she told him of her cancer and had a chat with them all.

Sarah continued: "They just said, ‘You will be honest?’ and I said, ‘I promise you that I’m going to be around for a jolly long time yet. It’s going to be a bit difficult. But I promise I won’t lie.’ And I think they were OK once I said that."

And to help their mum prepare for her treatment, the boys even cut hair off for her rather than waiting to let it fall out because of the chemo. However, she joked she wouldn't advise anyone to let four teenage boys loose on their hair.

She mocked her brood, saying they aren't going to be famous hairdressers, but explained that despite the tears beforehand, there was a sense of elation after.

The presenter went on to add that she plans to draw on her "inner strength" throughout her treatment process.

Sarah lost her mother to cancer when she was 10 years old. She had fought breast cancer before also being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Despite her diagnosis, Sarah is adamant she will continue working and has her sights focused on a new Channel 4 series.

She also has a book which is set for release later in the year.

She previously opened up on how her wild teen romance with her now-husband had "horrified" her family at the start.

Having ditched uni in the hope of becoming an actress, a 17-year-old Sarah took off travelling around the world after being rejected by drama school. She said the experience made her feel "lonely and seasick" so she returned home and picked up odd jobs.

At 18, although not keen on the idea, she got to know her brother's girlfriend's brother and things moved at lightening speed, much to the horror of their families.

“We were really young — he was 18 and I was 19. We moved in two weeks later and we bought a flat together about three months later," she told The Sun in June. "I look at 18-year-olds now and think, ‘God, if they came home and said they were buying a flat together, I would be horrified’.

"I don’t blame them for feeling that, but it does make me take young people’s relationships more seriously than other people might."
