Sanditon season 2: How to watch and will there be a third series as drama returns to ITV

The second series of Sanditon has finally returned and heroine Charlotte Heywood is set for more romantic adventures.

This time she's joined by a new addition to the programme: her hopelessly romantic sister, Alison.

At one point it looked like the costume drama wouldn't be returning after the heartbreaking end to season one.

ITV dropped the the show but it was picked up by PBS on Masterpiece and Britbox.

The regency-era period drama is a TV adaption of Jane Austen's novel of the same name.

Here's everything you need to know about the second series, including how to watch it and whether they'll be another season.

How to watch Sanditon season two

Season two of Sanditon starts airing on ITV1 on Friday July 22 at 9pm, and episodes will also be available on ITV Hub.

The drama was released in the US on March 20 2022 but is now finally hitting UK screens.

If you would rather binge the series, then the whole season is also available to watch on BritBox.

Will there be a Sanditon series three?

While the future of Sanditon seemed uncertain after the first series, fans will be pleased to know that the show will return for a third season.

When the drama was picked up by PBS Masterpiece and BritBox, they confirmed it had been renewed for two more series.

The renewal follows the show's success in America.

ITV’s head of drama Polly Hill said: “I’m so glad that the success of Sanditon in the US has paved the way for its return, and for ITV to continue on this wonderful journey.

"We know there are many loyal fans of the show in the UK that will be delighted to see its return and that we were able to find a way to bring it back.”

An official released date for Sanditon season three hasn't been confirmed yet, but the series is set to be released on BritBox and PBS Masterpiece in early 2023.

How does Jane Austen's Sanditon end?

Charlotte Heywood is played by Rose Williams (Red Planet (Sanditon 2) Ltd/James Pardon)

Sanditon was Jane Austen's final novel, but it was left unfinished.

The book was written in 1817, just months before her death, and tells the story of the spirited and unconventional Charlotte Heywood.

Austen was only able to write 11 chapters of the book before she became too ill to continue writing.

Sanditon fans were left devastated at the end of season one of the TV series, which they called very "un-Austen".

Jane Austen is is renowned for her happy endings, but series one ended with Charlotte's love interest Sidney saying goodbye to her as he returned to London to marry his rich old flame.

Austen never finished Charlotte's story, so Sanditon's producers can continue it the way they choose.

After the end of season one, producer Belinda Campbell told Vulture: "Look, the truth is, very honestly and very simply, that we had an unfinished Austen and we wanted to continue the story.

"It’s called Sanditon; it’s about the town. Our thought process was, 'let’s tell this story, but let’s tell the story of the town as well, so let’s see if we can turn it into a returning Jane Austen series'. So we don’t necessarily have to finish everything in that [first season].

"It’s the only Jane Austen out there where you can take it beyond the one arc."
