Two police officers have been shot in California, prompting a hunt for an unknown number of gunmen.
Police urged residents to stay inside their homes as operations continued in San Diego late on Thursday night.
A spokesperson announced the double shooting shortly after 11pm local time (7am BST, Friday) on Twitter, adding: “Their condition is unknown, keep them in your prayers.”
One suspect was arrested around an hour later but searches continued for others believed to remain on the run.
The circumstances of the incident in the Southcrest area were unclear.
Eight police officers were murdered in two separate attacks in Dallas and Baton Rouge earlier this month, although the majority of police shootings in the US occur during gun battles with armed suspects.
Tensions remain high in some communities following police killings of several unarmed men.
