Sam Thompson has been forced to change tack as he continues his epic 260 mile challenge to deliver the match ball for Soccer Aid, after picking up a calf injury.
The TV and radio favourite, 32, had originally planned to run a marathon before switching to his bike for the rest of today’s journey in what is set to be his longest day — but a spanner has been thrown in the works.
After being assessed by the medical team, he has been advised to begin on two wheels instead, giving his injured leg time to recover.
That hasn’t stopped him. The Staying Relevant podcast host remains determined to complete the full 72 mile stretch from Stadium MK in Milton Keynes to Villa Park in Birmingham, carrying the official Soccer Aid match ball — which he has affectionately named Bertie — on his back the entire way.

“Yesterday was really hard,” Sam admitted this morning. “The medical team are doing everything to look after me, but I’ve got to start today on the bike so I can use different muscles and hopefully get back on my feet soon. My goal is still the same. I’m getting that ball to Villa Park. I just need to keep pedalling.”
The former I’m A Celebrity winner added: “What I’m doing might have changed, but why I’m doing it hasn’t. I really need your support right now, so if you can donate or send some love, it would mean the world. It’s going to be an emotional one.”

Today’s route takes him through Towcester, Rugby, Coventry and Solihull, with rain and wind adding extra challenge. He is being supported by a physiotherapy and medical team who will assess him throughout the day to determine whether he can resume running.
The challenge began on Monday at Stamford Bridge in London and finishes Friday at Old Trafford in Manchester, the venue for this year’s Soccer Aid match. Along the way, Sam is passing some of the UK’s most iconic football stadiums, carrying the match ball from last year’s home to this year’s — all in support of UNICEF’s vital work helping children grow up safe, healthy and able to play.
Despite the setback, Sam’s determination remains unshaken. Last night, he passed the £100,000 fundraising mark — a huge milestone that has only strengthened his resolve to finish what he started.
