Sam Smith teases Madonna collaboration - with fans demanding answers after tour axe

Sam Smith fans have demanded answers after the chart-topper teased a link-up with Madonna just hours before their tour was cancelled in dramatic fashion.

The I'm Not The Only One hitmaker took to Instagram where they posted a short clip of both singers saying their names, while text reading "Sam and Madonna" flashed on the screen.

Shortly after, Sam also went on Twitter to say: "Manchester, we’ve got a surprise for you this evening. ‘Unholy’ won’t be the last song….”

Many fans were left excited, hoping the Queen of Pop would make an appearance.

"I swear to god if she gets brought on stage tonight imma die," wrote one fan.

Another added: "Sam and Madonna will probably perform together tonight in Manchester!"

"OMG can't wait," gushed a third.

However, just four songs into his show at the AO Arena Sam walked off stage leaving fans baffled as the venue was plunged into darkness.

Hours after the show, Sam explained they had "fought off a virus a few weeks ago" but had "felt fine" during soundcheck.

"During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong. I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won't," they wrote on Instagram.

"I am honestly heartbroken I couldn't finish the show tonight for you all. I love you all. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Sam concluded.

Fans of the singer were disappointed but wished Sam well after they cancelled the Manchester performance.

One wrote: "Gutted [the] Sam Smith show has been cancelled after four songs. Truly devastating it was on its way to being an amazing show."

The next day, Sam issued a further apology as they cancelled the rest of their UK tour.

On Sam's official Instagram page, they wrote: "Due to vocal issues during last night's Manchester performance, regrettably we will be cancelling the rescheduled Birmingham and Glasgow Sam Smith shows.

"Refunds will be available at point of purchase for all three dates; Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow.

"A spokesperson said, 'Doctors have advised due to vocal chord injury, Sam must have complete vocal rest.'

"'Sam is heartbroken to have had to cancel these shows but they have been told by doctors that if they keep singing, they will do permanent damage to their voice. If they take some rest they will be able to perform again.'"

It left many fans hitting out at the singer wanting to know what the "surprise" was going to be.

One wrote: "The surprise is there is no surprise and you’ve all gotta go home early x."

"It was hideous how it happened and how the crowd had to wait to be told after they where sounding literally incredible - but they’ve got to look after themselves and their voice ultimately.

"The promo for the Madonna song was up on digital billboards across Manchester too…," added another.

Someone else commented: "Not the surprise we wanted Sam but thanks! Hope you’re feeling better soon."
