Sam Smith has said “life is good” after revealing they now use the pronouns they/them.
The singer, 27, wrote about their joy at attending the premiere of the new Judy Garland biopic in Los Angeles with their friend Alok Vaid-Menon.
Writing about the event, Smith posted on Instagram and Twitter: “I just went to the JUDY premiere with my beautiful friend and I wore big white heels and a beat face and they wore d**ks in their ears. Life is good. Everything is in its right place.”
Smith recently requested to be referred to as “they”, six months after coming out as non-binary.
In an emotive Instagram post shared on Monday, they said they were “nervous” but were “ready to embrace” who they are “inside and out”.
“Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM,” they said.
“After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.
“I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but f*** it!”
Smith added: “I understand there will be many mistakes and misgendering but all I ask is you please, please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you.”
Fans and campaigners flocked to show support for Smith, with actress and body positivity activist Jameela Jamil writing on Twitter: “Bravo to Sam Smith. With more and more people in the public eye coming out as Non-Binary... can we convince the industry to allow awards ceremonies to create a third gender category? I feel as though this shouldn’t be too hard.”
