Following the star's exit from the stage, fans reported that the lights dimmed for around 20 minutes, with speculation there had been a 'power cut' before they were informed the show had been cancelled due to reported 'vocal issues'. Sam took to social media a few hours later and apologised, explaining an issue with his voice was the reason behind the abrupt ending.

This afternoon, Sam Smith has taken to social media again to issue a new update on what happened, whether their next run of shows would take place and the situation on refunds for cancelled shows including Manchester.

"A spokesperson said 'doctors have advised due to a vocal chord injury, Sam must have complete vocal rest. Sam is heartbroken to have had to cancel these shows but they have been told by doctors that if they keep singing they will do permeant damage to their voice. If they take some rest they will be able to perform again."

The story was shared with their 14.7 million followers with a caption on top reading: "I'm so sorry [heartbroken emoji]."

Fans were left 'fuming' and 'gutted' on Wednesday night after Smith's performance at Manchester's AO Arena was suddenly cancelled four songs in, and thousands at the sold out show were told to leave.

One fan who was at the gig with friends and his husband, told the M.E.N: "Sam came out and everyone was screaming and getting into it. They dedicated their show to Tina Turner and told us they had a surprise for us.

"Little did we no the surprise was them not coming back on stage. First it was an issue which would be sorted in two minutes, then about 25 minutes later we were told to go home. What a let down.
