Saliba shines, Willock's debut goal: How Arsenal's loanees did this week

Arsenal have utilised the loan market effectively this season, with a number of players spending time away from Mikel Arteta's squad.

This includes players seeking regular first-team action after falling down the pecking order in north London as well as young players looking to make the next step in their development.

It is an approach that has worked well for Arsenal, with Emile Smith Rowe flying the flag as a success story after excelling in a starting role this season following a successful loan last year with Huddersfield Town.

Here, we've provided an overview on seven players on loan who have featured for their club in the past few days, excluding those that did not feature.

Matteo Guendouzi

Matteo Guendouzi's performances with Hertha Berlin have caught the eye this season, potentially opening an avenue for him to work his way back into Mikel Arteta's plans.

However, the 21-year-old Frenchman saw his run of 13 consecutive starts in the Bundesliga come to a close on Friday evening, as he was named on the bench against Bayern Munich.

Guendouzi came on as a substitute for the final 34 minutes of the match but Hertha lost 1-0 following Kingsley Coman's first-half effort.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Having joined West Brom on loan for the remainder of the season, Ainsley Maitland-Niles made his debut for Sam Allardyce's side on Sunday.

It was a moment of significance too as the England international got the opportunity in central midfield that he has been looking for.

However, it was a match to forget as the Baggies lost 2-0 to Tottenham and Maitland-Niles never really got going.

William Saliba

A return to French football has propelled William Saliba back to his best, as he's quickly established himself as an integral member of the OGC Nice side.

A 3-0 victory over Angers pushed Nice further away from the relegation zone, with the club now 10-points clear with a game in hand.

Saliba impressed once again with his performance and was unfortunate not to score, hitting the crossbar with a powerful header.

Joe Willock

Joe Willock immediately made his mark at Newcastle United, opening the scoring on his debut as Steve Bruce's side defeated Southampton 3-2.

The 21-year-old played the entirety of the match for the hosts as part of a three-man midfield alongside Jeff Hendrick and Jonjo Shelvey, with Miguel Almiron playing in a more advanced role.

Willock has given himself a solid platform to build upon over the course of the coming weeks and clearly has a role to play in Bruce's plans.

Konstantinos Mavropanos

Konstantinos Mavropanos played another 90 minutes for VFB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga as part of a three-man defensive line.

However, it wasn't a match to remember as Champions League-chasing Bayer Leverkusen ran out as comfortable 5-2 winners.

Mavropanos was one of the better performers for Stuttgart though, finishing as the joint-top outfield performer in Whoscored 's ratings.

Zech Medley

Zech Medley quickly earned an opportunity in the Kilmarnock squad following his loan move north of the border, featuring for the full 90 minutes against St. Mirren.

While Kilmarnock lost the game 2-0, Medley was the joint-best performer for his side in Whoscored's player ratings.

Mark McGuinness

Mark McGuinness' run of starts for Ipswich Town continued in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Blackpool, making it 10 in a row for the young defender.

Winning nine aerial duels and achieving a pass success rate of 74%, it was a fine performance for the Republic of Ireland U21 international.

Not in action: Jordi Oseu-Tutu (Cardiff), Ben Sheaf (Coventry), Daniel Ballard (Blackpool), Harry Clarke (Oldham), James Olayinka (Southend), Matt Smith (Charlton), Tyreece John-Jules (Doncaster)
