Salah Competing with Ronaldo, Modric for UEFA Player of the Year Award

Egypt and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has been shortlisted along with Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid’s Luka Modric for the 2018 UEFA Player of the Year Award, announced UEFA on Monday.

Ronaldo and Modric both won the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid for the third year in a row in May, defeating Salah’s Liverpool. The Portuguese superstar has since signed with Juventus.

Salah was famously fouled by Real defender Sergio Ramos during the first half of the final, forcing the tearful Egyptian to be substituted.

The incident marked a sour note to an otherwise prolific season Salah spent at Liverpool on his return to England.

He made 13 appearances in the Champions League, scoring 10 goals and making ten assists.

In the Premier League, he made 36 appearances and scored 32 times.

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said of Salah: "I read and hear about him being a wonderful role model for Egypt, north Africa, for the wider Arabic world and for Muslims. But he is a role model full stop. The only labels we should put on Mo is what a good person he is and what a fantastic footballer he is."
