Saints draft Notre Dame TE Alize Mack in Round 7

The New Orleans Saints used the first of two picks in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft to add Notre Dame tight end Alize Mack at No. 231 overall. Mack showed flashes of serious talent in his career at South Bend, but didn’t make a consistent impact — or even get on the field regularly — until his senior year. The Saints have to be thinking they can get the best out of the 6-foot-4, 250-pounder. Mack tested like a well-rounded, if pedestrian athlete at the combine.

Mack was one of the few players to make an official visit to New Orleans during the pre-draft process; his performance in private workouts, drills, and interviews evidently convinced the Saints to take a chance on him at the end of the draft.

With free agent signing Jared Cook expected to take on a major role in the offense as the lead tight end and Josh Hill in place as a reliable backup, it will fall to Mack to show that he can offer more than reserves Garrett Griffin and Dan Arnold. It’ll be interesting to see how he performs over the summer in his bid to make the team.
