Sainsbury's in urgent product recall of fruit over hepatitis contamination fears

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's has issued an urgent recall of one of its food products over fears it could be contaminated with an infectious disease.

The high street chain warned its customers over their popular packets of Taste the Difference Medjool dates and a possible link to Hepatitis A.

The Chronicle reports the alert relates to 200g and 500g bags with a supplier/site code of K0014 EW on the packaging. It applies for all 'Best Before' dates.

Hepatitis A attacks the liver and symptoms caused by it usually include fever, nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, dark-coloured urine and jaundice - a yellowing of the skin.

In its food recall notice, Sainsbury's said: "If you have bought these products do not eat them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.

"We are asking customers who have purchased these products with this specific supplier code not to eat them and to return them to their nearest Sainsbury's store for a full refund when they next visit for groceries and other essentials.

"Please note that packs without this code present are not affected."

Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products.

These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

Sainsbury's has said that for any concerns or queries or if customers affected by the recall are vulnerable, shielding or otherwise unable to return the product to store then go on its website - Sainsburys.co.uk/help or contact its care line on 0800 636262.

No other products have been affected by this issue.
