Sainsbury's bans fireworks ahead of Bonfire Night 2021 as Asda, Tesco and more issue update

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's, which stopped selling fireworks in 2019, has confirmed the explosives will not be returning this year for Bonfire Night 2021.

The high street retailer have never explained why the move to remove fireworks from their stores was made, but it is welcomed by pet owners whose animals are scared by the loud bangs each year as well as major animal charity Dogs Trust.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: "We regularly review the products available in our stores and we are no longer selling fireworks based on a range of factors.

"Customers can continue to choose from a range of seasonal products, such as glow sticks and light-up spinning wands."

However, several other major supermarkets have opted to continue the sale of fireworks in the run up to Bonfire Night and have issued updates to customers ahead of November.

Some retailers are offering 'low noise' fireworks, with a spokesperson for Asda stating: "We know that many of our customers love fireworks, but we also know that some customers and their pets don’t like the noise, which is why this year we have launched a collection of low noise fireworks so that everyone can still enjoy the show."

Both Tesco and Aldi will be selling fireworks this year while The Co-op will not be stocking the popular item at all.

It’s estimated 45% of dogs show signs of fear when they hear fireworks and several countries, including Ireland, have banned the sale of private-use fireworks because of concerns over their impact on people, pets, livestock and wildlife.

Vets suggest closing all windows and blinds to prevent bangs and flashes, and avoid taking your dog for a walk after dark during the season.
