Sadness as Newcastle gay bar Eazy Street prepares to close this weekend

A popular Newcastle drag artist has confirmed the closure of a city centre gay bar "with a heavy heart" saying this week will be the last chance for customers to party.

Eazy Street in Westmoreland Road will shut its doors for good on Sunday and regular perfomer Miss Lucy, who credits the bar with shaping her career, says that the Easter weekend will be a final chance for its fans and staff to say goodbye. And in a moving post on Facebook, she thanked management and customers for their support over the years at the cabaret and trebles bar which has proved a hit since it opened on the gay scene in the former home of Camp David, next to The Dog & Parrot pub.

Miss Lucy wrote: "The past 13 years have been an amazing 13 years. I started a month after it opened and will be there when it closes the doors for the final time.

"I started there as a baby queen and the bar has moulded me into the queen I am today." She had started the message saying: "I’m nearly in tears writing this post."

She said she could "finally confirm what’s been on everyone’s lips lately" adding that is "with a heavy heart" that she is informing people this will be the last week of Eazy Street and its upstairs karaoke night Eazyoke.

"We will be closing the doors permanently on Sunday night." And to sign off, 'The Grand Finale' will see Miss Lucy leading the party anthems after fellow drag queens Danni Delonco gets the entertainment started from 5pm and coinciding with Mercury.co.uk in action in the karaoke lounge from 9pm. There also will be guest cabaret spots.

Miss Lucy mentioned there were too many acts, singers, drag queens and TV stars to mention as having performed there over the years and thanked those behind the venue: HH Leisure's Paul Rowe and Joe Henry - who also launched a branch of Eazy Street in Durham in 2012 - "for coming up with the idea in the first place and letting me be part of this amazing journey".

She mentioned staff past and present; the management and her "My Eazy family", saying "I’ll miss you loads" and she added: "The biggest thank you is to all our loyal customers over the years for their continued support and friendship."

Miss Lucy is not retiring but still will be "kicking around the scene somewhere", including at The Tipsy Cow on a Sunday and she said "you might be seeing me in another bar on the scene very soon". Eazy Street will be open from Thursday to Sunday this final week and customers are invited to enjoy the Easter weekend there "giving you all a chance to have that one final night out and say goodbye to us all!" said Miss Lucy, adding: "Eazy does it……one last time!"

Responses on Facebook to news of the closure included "Nooooooooo!"; "Am so gutted - it’s my fav place!!!" and "Whaaaaat. I remember starting when it opened! That’s so sad". Others said "Oh wow what a shame! I love Eazy Street!" and "Everyone has such fond memories of the place - I can imagine the final hurrah will be unreal." There were also similar comments to the news on Eazy Street's Facebook page.
