Sacha Baron Cohen in The Spy: Netflix release date, trailer and what we know so far

Netflix has unveiled the trailer for its brand new thriller starring Sacha Baron Cohen.

The Spy, which will be exclusive to the streaming service, tells the story of an Israeli secret agent who leads a double life as a spy infiltrating the Syrian government.

Cohen, who is known for his comedic characters including Ali G and Borat, stars as the lead character Eli Cohen.

The trailer sees Eli struggling to cope with his secretive lifestyle and risk losing himself as a result of his split identities.

“Do you consider yourself a patriot?” Eli is asked in the trailer, to which he responds: “I love this country with all my might.”

“If your country needed you to lie to your friends, your family, your wife, would you do it?” he’s asked. “If your country asked you to risk your life, would you do it?”

Suffice to say, we’re already hooked from the trailer.

As we await the official release, here’s everything we know so far about The Spy:

When is The Spy released on Netflix?

The six-episode mini-series will drop on Netflix on September 6, so we don’t have long to wait!

What’s the plot?

The true crime thriller is ‘inspired by the real-life story of former notorious Mossad agent, Eli Cohen, who successfully goes undercover in Syria and ultimately changed the course of Israel’s history,’ according to Netflix.

Whilst undercover, Cohen successfully becomes close to military leaders and gains a level of trust about Syria’s biggest anti-Israel initiatives.

However, Cohen is so good at his job that he begins to lose track of his separate identities.

“Taking off the clothes doesn’t work anymore,” he confesses in the trailer, “I can’t put him away.”

Who else stars in it?

Some of the stars cast alongside Cohen include Hadar Ratzon Rotem (Homeland) as his wife, and Noah Emmerich (The Americans) as the agent’s handler. Waleed Zuaiter (Colony) also stars as Amin Al-Hafz, a military officer who thinks he’s found the perfect ally in undercover Cohen.

The series is written and directed by Emmy award winner Gideon Raff (Prisoners of War, Homeland and Tyrant).
