Sabrina Carpenter has apologised after mistaking a zaghrouta — an Arabic cheer — for a yodel during her Coachella set on Friday night.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the “Go Go Juice” singer issued a public apology, claiming that her reaction to the cultural cheer was “pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill-intended”.
“My apologies, I didn’t see this person with my eyes and couldn’t hear clearly,” Carpenter penned.
“My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill-intended. [I] could have handled it better! Now I know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out.”
Carpenter’s apology comes hours after her Coachella extravaganza, where she played a series of songs from “Manchild” to “Don’t Smile”. However, the incident occurred while she was playing the piano.
After a fan in the crowd performed a zaghrouta, Carpenter said into the mic, “Is that what you’re doing?”.
“I don’t like it,” Carpenter said before the fan yelled, “That’s my culture.”
“That’s your culture, it’s yodelling?” she replied.
“It’s a call. A celebration,” the fan responded.
“Is this Burning Man? What’s going on? This is weird,” Carpenter added.
Shortly after the incident, some folks took to social media claiming that the Short n Sweet songstress was “mocking” the Arabic cheer and culture after she described it as “weird” on the Coachella stage.
This isn’t the first time Carpenter has landed herself in hot water. In October 2025, fellow artist Rina Sawayama called out the “Please Please Please” singer for Cultural Insensitivity.
In Carpenter’s 2025 Saturday Night Live performance, the singer sported a bedazzled Karate gi alongside dancers in a dojo-styled set. However, Sawayama pointed out that the dancers were wearing shoes on the tatami, a traditional woven flooring used to cover entire rooms.
“Big love to Sabrina but fellow artists’ creative teams…,” Sawayama began in her IG Story.
“If we are clearly referencing a culture, please can you do so with the research, respect and care it deserves.”

“Shoes on tatami is jail,” the singer continued.
Carpenter nor her creative team have not responded to Sawayama publicly.
