Ryder Cup 2025 format explained: What is foursomes and fourball golf?

The Ryder Cup takes centre stage once again over the coming days as one of sport’s most exciting and dramatic team events returns.

Team Europe head to New York hoping to pull off a rare success on American soil at the notoriously difficult Bethpage Black, where the atmosphere will be intense to say the least.

Only twice this century have the Europeans tasted victory across the Atlantic, having had a miserable time away from home since the so-called ‘Miracle at Medinah’ back in 2012.

Luke Donald’s team is spearheaded by Rory McIlroy and will be full of confidence after their memorable win in Rome two years ago, but they come up against a formidable Team USA lineup that includes seven of the world’s current top 10-ranked golfers, with Keegan Bradley’s side led by reigning No1 Scottie Scheffler.

It will take some effort from Europe to retain their crown as the action begins on Friday with the usual mix of foursomes and fourball matches, with Saturday following the same format before the all-important singles showdowns take place on Sunday.

What is fourball golf?

The fourball format consists of a pair of players from each side playing in one group, each player playing their own ball.

At the end of each hole the best score from each pair is counted towards whether the hole goes to Team Europe, Team USA or is halved.

What is foursomes golf?

In foursomes there are the same number of golfers but instead of playing their own ball the pairs take alternate shots with the same ball.

Complications can arise here as to whose ball is used, as each man playing will be accustomed to the particular ball they use on Tour.
