Ryder Cup 2025: Record-Breaking Tommy Fleetwood Helps Europe Create History And Open Up Massive Lead Heading Into Sunday Singles

Team Europe took another giant leap towards retaining the Ryder Cup on Saturday after a historic performance over Team USA at Bethpage Black.

An early 4&2 win for Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Young over Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick in the morning foursomes was merely an anomaly over the course of the day's play, with triumphs in all three other foursomes contests falling to European pairs.

After extending their overnight advantage to 8.5 - 3.5, Luke Donald's men picked up where they left off in the afternoon despite the last-minute substitution of Viktor Hovland for Tyrrell Hatton in the last match.

The Norwegian suffered a neck issue during his dramatic win alongside Robert MacIntyre minutes earlier and could not peg it up with Fitzpatrick, so Hatton was thrown in at the last minute - a decision which ultimately made little difference to the visitors' victory quest.

The fourball clashes begin in tight fashion initially as the US side stepped up their performance levels from Friday. But, unfortunately for the home team, so did Europe and the men in burnt orange polos began to take control once more.

With tensions mounting as Saturday wore on - perhaps leading to a flashpoint involving DeChambeau and Justin Rose - Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry came through a brutal contest against Justin Thomas and Young to lead Europe in yet another 3-1 session success.

Rose and Tommy Fleetwood produced the second European point of the afternoon session shortly after before the two final matches were decided on the 18th green.

JJ Spaun's heroics offered a glimmer of hope to the US in the penultimate contest as he and Xander Schauffele snatched a 1up win, but Hatton and Fitzpatrick moved in swiftly to shut down any signs of American momentum with a pair of stunning approaches moments later.

An 11.5 - 4.5 lead for Europe made them the first team since 1979 to surpass 11 points prior to Sunday's singles action.

In among that was more history for Fleetwood, who - after going 4-0 for the second time in his career - generated the highest career Ryder Cup winning percentage among all Europeans with at least 10 matches (75%).

With 12 matches to come on Sunday, Team Europe needs only 2.5 points to retain the Ryder Cup and three points to win it outright once more.

40 MINUTES TO GO

The sun is just starting to rise in New York as we watch Russell Henley work on his putting in the dark.

What an atmosphere we're going to see when the 1st tee shots are struck!

2-2 DRAW

Paul McGinley says he'd be happy with a 2-2 draw from the opening session and calls Donald's decision to put McIlroy and Fleetwood out in the third match as smart strategy.

THE SUN HAS RISEN

We finally have some light at Bethpage with just 15 minutes remaining before the 2025 Ryder Cup officially begins.

MORE AWAY FANS THAN LAST TIME

Remember the 2021 Ryder Cup? It was delayed a year due to Covid-19 but it still meant that there were very few European fans on-site to support their side.

Don't get me wrong, it is still going to be a tough atmosphere for Luke Donald's side but there are a good amount of European fans at Bethpage to cheer on the away side.

'A HUGE CHALLENGE'

Paul McGinley admits the Europeans have a "huge challenge" ahead with eight of the last nine Ryder Cups going to the home side.

STUNNING SCENES

WE ARE UNDERWAY!

Incredible scenes.

Jon Rahm hits the opening tee shot and looks to have found the rough well down the right.

Bryson DeChambeau steps up for USA and unleashes a drive towards the green. It's a beauty that finishes just short of the putting surface.

KEEGAN BRADLEY ON DECHAMBEAU:

"Did you see what he just did? That's why we have him there," Keegan Bradley says of Bryson DeChambeau.

THOMAS AND DECHAMBEAU'S ENTRANCE

INCREDIBLE WALK TO THE 1ST TEE

EUROPE FIRST TO PLAY SECOND SHOTS ON 1

Tyrrell Hatton, from the right rough, pitches it up to around 20ft. Not great but he did have a fairly heavy lie, a bunker to go over and lots of US fans jeering him.

Thomas is in great shape just shy of the green after a phenomenal drive from DeChambeau.

POOR FROM THOMAS

His chip shot comes up well short to leave DeChambeau around 15ft in.

DECHAMBEAU'S OPENING DRIVE

USA 1UP

Bryson DeChambeau holes from around 12ft to put the USA 1up after Jon Rahm's putt came up just short.

BRYSON'S OPENING BIRDIE

MATCH 2

Ludvig Aberg finds the fairway for Europe as Russell Henley pulls his drive down the left. There's barely any rough and soft greens - and his partner is Scottie Scheffler - so no worries there.

DECHAMBEAU INTO 2

Bryson has hit a beauty of a wedge into the 2nd from the middle of the fairway that rips back a good 20-25ft to leave Thomas with a 10-footer for birdie.

Jon Rahm up next from 101 yards and his spins back a good 40-feet. Outside birdie look for the Europeans.

THESE GREENS ARE SPINNY

After all the rain it comes as no surprise but wow, we just saw a combined 70ft of backspin on the 2nd green I'd guess.

SURPRISINGLY POOR FROM SCHEFFLER

The World No.1's wedge shot into the 1st comes up a good 40ft shot. Surprising!

Tyrrell Hatton has missed his birdie chance at the 2nd, also as Justin Thomas' birdie chance slides by on the left side. Europe got away with one there.

Back to the 1st and Matt Fitzpatrick wedges it tight to leave around 4ft for birdie.

EUROPE 1UP IN GAME TWO

Aberg slots home from 4ft after Fitzpatrick's stunning wedge shot in.

BRYSON LEFT ON 3

DeChambeau misses the green on the 212 yard par-3 3rd, pulling his 6-iron left into the bunker.

Rahm follows him in there! Poor from the Spaniard with the door open.

I MISS THE ROLEX HOUR

We're seeing a lot of commercial breaks here on the broadcast which is a shame.

DECHAMBEAU'S WEDGE INTO 2 FROM EARLIER...

Look at that spin.

'IS THIS A LIBRARY?'

Great chant from the European fans at the 1st tee during a rare quiet moment. Shane Lowry is loving it, laughing and clapping along.

MATCH 3 UP NEXT MORIKAWA/ENGLISH vs MCILROY/FLEETWOOD

Rory McIlroy up first for Europe, bombing a drive up the right to leave a short chip on from the rough.

Harris English finds the fairway, much further back and to the left.

GREAT PUTT FROM BRYSON AT 3

DeChambeau holes from 7ft on the 3rd after the Europeans easily got it up-and-down. A great save.

THE ROUGH REALLY IS REMARKABLE

Justin Thomas has just missed the fairway right on the 4th and it's hard to tell if he's found the fairway or not. He hasn't, but the lie is so good that there really doesn't seem to be much penalty for wayward drives.

SCHEFFLER WITH A GOOD LOOK FOR BIRDIE ON 2

The World No.1 has 8ft for birdie on the 2nd to get the US back to all-square and he rolls it in dead-center.

SOLHEIM CUP CAPTAINS IN THE HOUSE

STUNNING FROM FLEETWOOD

From a tricky lie on the 1st, he chips it over the bunker and it runs up to 3ft. McIlroy should easily convert that, meaning Harris English will have to hole his 10-footer from the fringe.

MCILROY/FLEETWOOD 1UP

Harris English's putt slides by and McIlroy converts from 4ft.

Fleetwood-Mac 1up.

HIGH CLASS GOLF

Fitzpatrick and Thomas have both just hit some beautiful chip shots. Helps with short rough and soft greens but still, these really are the best players in the world.

FINAL GAME ON THE 1ST TEE

Robert MacIntyre up first and he pushes it into the left rough. Again, absolutely no worries in the rough as the ball is sitting up perfectly.

Xander Schauffele follows with a strong drive into the 1st cut up the right. Schauffele and Cantlay have lost three of their last four matches together so I'm interested to see how they fare today.

MCGINLEY:

"They feel they're better on the front foot than us, shooting lower scores, hence the set up the way it is," Paul McGinley on the friendly course setup at Bethpage.

FIRST APOLOGIES FOR HATTON LANGUAGE

We've made it to the 5th hole before the broadcast has had to apologize for Tyrrell Hatton's language. He's not pleased with his approach into the par-4.

EUROPE ESCAPE ON 1

Xander Schauffele has just pulled a great birdie chance left on the 1st. Europe survive by the skin of their teeth to tie.

EVERYONE MISSING THE 3RD GREEN LEFT

McIlroy is the next player to miss the 3rd green left. Fleetwood should be fine to chip that close, however.

EUROPE 1UP IN SECOND MATCH

Scheffler and Henley can only par the par-5 3rd hole after Henley's 10-foot birdie putt slides by left.

OH DEAR HATTON

On the 6th, Hatton pulls his drive MILES left and into knee-high rough. The US fans look to have found it but they can't be good.

SCHAUFFELE WITH THE BEST SHOT WE'VE SEEN INTO 2

The two-time Major winner judges the spin to perfection on the 2nd and leaves Cantlay what should be an easy birdie chance. Should be USA 1up in the final game.

SCHEFFLER AT 5...WOW

From 186 yards into the 5th hole, Scheffler hits a mid-iron to about 5ft. It stops dead to set up a great birdie chance.

With soft greens, Scottie Scheffler is frightening with an iron in hand.

Hang on a minute... Matt Fitzpatrick has just hit it even closer! Wow, incredible golf on display here.

USA 1UP IN FINAL MATCH

After that superb approach into from Schauffele, Cantlay rolls in the birdie from 6ft to put the Americans 1up.

MCDOWELL UNHAPPY WITH COMMERCIAL LOAD

I must say, I agree with him. This is the biggest event in the sport and we are missing quite a lot due to the commercial breaks.

INCREDIBLE FROM RAHM

Remember I said Hatton hit his drive on 6 into knee-high rough? Rahm has somehow managed to wedge it to within 10-15ft. Remarkable.

BIG MISS FROM HENLEY

The World No.3 and Ryder Cup rookie cannot convert Scheffler's stunning approach into 5 and Aberg/Fitzpatrick go 2up. That's two short-ish misses from Henley already.

INCREDIBLE FROM RAHM

FIRST GROUP HOLDING UP PLAY

Hatton's wayward drive on 6 caused some confusion over whose turn it was to play their second shots, and it has led to quite a slow hole with the second group waiting back on the fairway to hit their shots in.

Rahm seemed to take an AGE to tap in his four-footer to halve the hole. I wonder if there's some gamesmanship there or he was just genuinely taking his time.

IMPRESSIVE START FROM EUROPE HERE

There's a saying in boxing that you can sometimes tell who's going to win the fight within 10 seconds. My early observations in this Ryder Cup is that Europe have not shown any weakness so far.

The home crowd are fairly quiet at the moment - it is only half 8 in the morning - but some of that has to be down to Europe's play.

This looks like it could go right down to the wire on Sunday, hopefully.

FLEETWOOD MAC 2UP

A poor birdie effort from Harris English is pounced on by Rory McIlroy who holes his birdie putt from a similar length to go 2up.

BIG FROM FITZPATRICK!

The Englishman holes from around 12ft on the 6th for birdie to put the pressure on Scheffler and Henley.

Can Scheffler match him? No! His downhill, right-to-lefter stays out to the right.

3up Europe.

A STICK.

Rahm pushes his drive down the right on the 7th and it's resting up against a stick. Slow motion footage shows the ball perhaps rock a little but I don't think it moved.

We may hear more on this... Probably not though, I think Europe are all good.

Hatton hits a good shot to find the green, which Rahm claps, coming after Justin Thomas hit a poor iron shot well short and left.

Stick update: Wayne Riley says the official ruling is that the ball oscillated but did not move so all good.

FLEETWOOD MAC 3UP

McIlroy holes another good close-range birdie putt to put Europe 3up in the third game.

BIG MISS FROM THOMAS

After a poor iron shot short and left on the 7th, he misses from 6ft after Bryson DeChambeau's bunker shot.

Big, big miss and you feel that this is starting to sway further to the Europeans.

RORY MCILROY - WOW!

McIlroy has just stuck it to within 2ft on the 6th with a wedge in hand. Incredible.

Fleetwood Mac are rolling here and they go 4up after Morikawa's birdie effort stays right.

In the first match, DeChambeau has just missed a birdie chance on the par-3 8th as Jon Rahm holes to put Europe 1up. A huge roar as well from the European fans!

Rahm/Hatton have just won back-to-back holes to flip this match.

CHANGE OVER

Elliott Heath signing off here from what has been an immense start from Luke Donald's Europeans.

They have played superbly well and the crowd is sounding very subdued so far.

Over to Michael Weston...

THOMAS SHORT

The top match has swung, and now they're under pressure. Thomas comes up short with a wedge. Hatton pounces. Advantage Europe again. Annnnnnnd........ time for ANOTHER ad break.

RAHM MISSES

Chance gone for Rahm in the top match - he misses from about 10 feet. They stay 1UP through nine. Morikawa makes a tidy comeback putt after English fired a long distance 6ft by.

TOMMY THROWS A DART

Fleetwood is keeping the pressure on, 7-iron down the hill on the par-3 8th. That's just 5ft away.

CANTLAY WITH A SHOCKER

Europe dodge a bullet there. Patrick Cantlay never settled over the 10-footer for the win on the 6th. Comes up short... not his best. All very quiet at Bethpage Black at the moment.

MATT BERG 4UP

This is getting away from the US here. First, Aberg drains a mid range effort, and gives it the walk-in. Then McIlroy tidies up from close range on the 8th after Tommy's fine tee short. Europeans extending their lead in both of those matches. Early worries for Bradley. A long way to go but this is not the start Team USA were hoping for. 3-1 wouldn't be a the end of the world if it stays that way, but a few of the stars on the US side haven't found their stride just yet.

WALKING THEM IN

Ludvig Aberg is enjoying himself out there at the moment - never looked anywhere else this one.

BRYSON NOT HOLDING BACK

Jon Rahm and Bryson seem to be having their own long drive contest at the moment - and Rahm is more than holding his own. Both players striping it.

What the USA really need is some kick-in birdies.... like that from Collin. What a shot. Stiff. Pick it up. Now Tommy... also brilliant. McIlroy will have an 8-footer to go out in -6.

RED WIPED OFF

Not a good putt there from Bob. That was to take the only red off the board - a wafty one that doesn't threaten. It doesn't matter. The US miss from close range, and that match is now all square.

RARE MISS

McIlroy misses. Morikawa and English reduce the deficit - now 4 down.

WOW... CHEERS PARTNER

Bryson has one for the hole... straight putt, 15ft. Aggressive effort, runs 4ft by. Thomas remains nice and calm to roll it in. The situation of the match is playing a part. Some of the putts the US have missed have been a little forced, especially that one there from Bryson.

Two tight matches, two not so tight.

YES, XANDER!

That's more like it. This man has a very cool head - you just knew he'd make that one. Lovely stroke, 10 footer down the hill with a bit of a break, and he walks it in. Lovely.

We have red on the board again.

MORE OF THIS NEEDED

This is the type of iron play we're used to seeing from Collin... lot's more required if they're to get out of the hole they find themself in.

TOO MANY ERRORS

Bryson goes long at 12. Scheffler leaves Henley in a different zip code at 11. Henley then comes up massively short - but Scheffler rolls it in. No damage done.

BIG!

Hatton takes his time, stepping back to swat a bug away off his ball. Steps back in and lands a big blow with a 20-footer. Europe go 2up in the top game.

HENLEY LONG ON 12

Very long. "Sit," he shouts, as soon as it leaves the clubface. And it does - because it hits the crowd. Lucky break (not for the fan).

ANOTHER POOR PUTT

English this time gets the speed all wrong - that was for a win on 11 and he belts it through the break. That was a good chance - only about 12 feet away.

WATCH OUT MARSHAL!

Thomas loses one right, but it hits a marshal standing all alone. That might be a decent break. Hatton sticks one deep in the rough behind the green. Interesting game within a game coming up there on 13.

HATTON LANDS A BLOW

Here's that big putt from Tyrrell. How significant could this be?

WORLD NO.1 & NO.3 ALL AT SEA

Aberg and Fitz have been very good, but Henley and Scheffler have just not clicked. Can't remember Scottie Scheffler looking quite so down in the dumps... not since Rome. I imagine he's sick of the sight of Ludvig. They're now 5 down.

ANOTHER BLOW LANDED

Tyrrell can smell blood. He calmly rolls in an 8-footer to put Europe 3up in the top match. That was a very fine up-and-down from the LIV pairing.

XANDER/PAT GOING WELL

A fairly reliable pair are these two. 2up and in command of the bottom match. Xander is looking like that player from 2024, which is great to see. There's not been a lot to cheer so far if you're an American fan, but this guy is one of the few in the zone.

EUROPE TICKING OFF HOLES

No fireworks needed from Europe now - certainly not in the middle two matches.

RAHM RESPONDS

We've not had enough of these moments so far. Bryson rolls in a huge putt and rallies up the crowd. Rahm responds with a 6 footer than never left the center of the cup.

EUROPE CLOSING IN ON FIRST POINTS

3up, 4up, 5up... but Xander and Patrick are doing the business for Bradley in the bottom match. 3up now after a sloppy 3-putt from the Europeans.

RAHM VERY CALM

This is how to keep Bryson and JT at arm's length.

PLUGGED!

Wow, these greens are soft. Has it been raining at Bethpage? Collin very unlucky not to get some action there - the ball plugs on the green.

PUTTS TO WIN

Rahm comes up short. McIlroy too with an outside chance, misses.

RAHM & HATTON WIN 4&3

MCILROY & FLEETWOOD WIN 5&4

FLEETWOOD MAC 3/3

Three from three in the foursomes for Rory and Tommy. Lots of love, as there is between Hatton and Rahm, both pairs speaking to the media. Long way to go etc, not getting ahead of themselves.

FIRST POINTS GO TO EUROPE

0-2, then. Back out to the course. Scheffler and Henley looking like they want to be put out their misery, but Schauffele and Cantlay have the upper hand in the bottom match. MacIntye and Hovland have just pulled one back, though. It's now crucial for Bradley that he gets this point on the board.

ABERG & FITZPATRICK WIN 5&3

NOW 0-3

It's not often you see Scheffler on the receiving end - he's normally the one dishing out the birdies, but that was near-faultless stuff from the European pair. Matt Fitzpatrick has two putts for the win and for a moment it looks like Aberg will have a tap-in for the victory from about an inch, but the ball just falls in. Game over in that one. 5&3.

HAPPY MATT

A first Ryder Cup point for Matt Fitzpatrick in the foursomes, and it's come against the World No.1 and World No.3. It's very quiet at Bethpage but that'll surely change at some point. Might also have something to do with beers costing $15.

GAME ON!

Disaster in the bottom match - from 3up to 1up. If there's one thing Keegan Bradley doesn't want it's a nervy wait for the first point, which looked a certainty 20 minutes ago. Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay are now just 1up through 13 holes.

COMING UP...

12:25pm: Match 5
12:41pm: Match 6
12:57pm: Match 7
1:13pm: Match 8

WORLD NO.1 SCHEFFLER...

"I felt like Russ and I did some good things. We just didn’t hole enough putts early. We had some chances. I think the putts just didn’t fall. But overall, the guys we played, they played a really good round, and go back out this afternoon and see what we can do."

BRADLEY STILL SMILING

Why wouldn't he be? Early days. No sense in looking worried. They'll believe they can turn this around this afternoon - no doubt about that... so long as Schauffele and Cantlay put some red on the board.

XANDER WELL WIDE

Xander has gone into the hospitality on the 15th. Not a bad idea, maybe grab a couple of cold ones. In all seriousness, that was soooo wide. This match might be about to go all square...

CHEERS!

... For Hovland coming up short. Door was open there. Now Cantlay from 170 yards. Tight angle, lie not fantastic. He comes up short, too. Odds on a half, here.

DONALD...

"It's nice to see the boys playing well. Once Friday goes off, they know the plan." Rather dull these interviews. Lots of cliches, as you'd expect. Stick to the action!

U-S-A, U-S-A...

A few cheers after that nice pitch from Xander, but Cantlay misses the putt from about 6-8ft. Now on Viktor to square the match. "Hurry up," says one fan. Viktor taking a long time over this. Makes it. ALL SQUARE.

SCHEFFLER 14 DOWN IN FOURSOMES

Not the best record. Still wouldn't want to play him in the singles.

XANDER DIGGING IN

Can't question this man's fight and bottom - a fine approach there on 16. MacIntyre next. 157 yards, right at it... down to a putting contest.

STILL ALL SQUARE

Two final approaches. Two average putts. Cantlay hasn't looked at all comfortable on the greens today. He's putting uphill there with a chance to win the hole, and it doesn't really threaten. Let's not forget how big this match has become. They wouldn't be human if they weren't feeling it...

A REMINDER OF HOW THINGS STAND... 0-3

Match 1: DeChambeau/Thomas (USA) vs Rahm/Hatton (EUR) - EUR win 4&3
Match 2: Scheffler/Henley (USA) vs Aberg/Fitzpatrick (EUR) - EUR win 5&3
Match 3: Morikawa/English (USA) vs McIlroy Fleetwood (EUR) - EUR win 5&4
Match 4: Schauffele/Cantlay (USA) vs MacIntyre/Hovland (EUR) - A/S thru 16

ADVANTAGE USA

Bob comes up short in the sand and lets rip with an expletive. Xander comes in right over the flag and leaves his partner with a very makable putt. Hovland won't like what he sees when he reaches the green - he's plugged in the trap. It's not totally plugged, but it's not exactly pretty. Big chance for the US to retake the lead in the final match of the morning's foursomes.

VIKTOR FIGHTS BACK

Here's the reason we're all square.

FOR THE WIN ON 17...

Oh, Patrick, you had it! Great read, just comes up a little short. Now over to Bob who has a horrid putt. Viktor played a high-class bunker shot from below the green. Bob, though, has a 10-footer - and some very industrial language to deal with. He misses. In fairness, the heckling does seem to stop once the players are over the ball! I wouldn't say you could have heard a pin drop, but it was pretty quiet... Anyway, 1UP to the Americans coming down the last.

CLUTCH FROM CANTLAY

Cantlay finds the fairway with his drive. Very nicely done. Viktor carves it waaaay right. I'm calling it.... USA wins 2up. Team USA about to get on the board, surely.

XANDER IN POSITION A

105 yards. He can close out the match with a dart, here. Just needs to watch the spin. It's perfect. May as well shake hands!

SCHAUFFELE & CANTLAY WIN 2UP

EUROPE LEAD 3-1 AS AFTERNOON FOUR-BALLS ANNOUNCED

Cantlay and Schauffele get the first points on the board for the US team, with the four-balls announced for this afternoon.

They are:

  • Scheffler/Spaun (USA) vs Rahm/Straka (EUR)
  • Griffin/DeChambeau (USA) vs Fleetwood/Rose (EUR)
  • Young/Thomas (USA) vs Aberg/Hjogaard (EUR)
  • Burns/Cantlay (USA) vs McIlroy/Lowry (EUR)

PRESIDENT TRUMP IS IN THE BUILDING

5 MINUTES TO GO

President Trump is in the building and, as the national anthem blares out and the flyovers happen, we are just five minutes away from the four-balls starting.

The Americans need a big session this afternoon, and it'll be World No.1 Scheffler and Ryder Cup rookie JJ Spaun leading out the home side. They will play Rahm and Sepp Straka, who didn't feature this morning.

EUROPE AND USA ARE ON THE TEE

The boos are ringing out, so it must mean Europe are on the tee!

Rahm and Straka stride to the opening hole, with the European duo paired together for the very first time. Rahm has a four-balls record of one win, two loses and two ties, while Straka makes his four-ball debut.

Scheffler and Spaun are also making their way to the first tee. The World No.1 has one win and two losses in four-balls, while Spaun is making his Ryder Cup debut.

Here we go!

HOW EUROPE CLAIMED THEIR FIRST POINT

OPENING TEE SHOTS

Rahm and Straka are up first, with Rahm leading the session off. He found the right rough earlier in the foursomes and, this time around, he nukes his tee shot into the left rough. That's not a bad angle to that flag.

Straka, meanwhile, also pulls his tee shot left and into the rough, leaving himself around 30 yards behind his Spanish teammate.

The Americans are next, with Spaun hitting his first ever competitive shot in the Ryder Cup. Instead of going left, the US Open champion goes right, finding himself with a poor lie for his second.

Finally, it's Scheffler's turn to tee off and, following a defeat this morning, the World No.1 also finds the left rough. The fairway is left untouched.

HEAR THE NOISE

ADVANTAGE AMERICA

Straka comes up short with his approach into the first, while Scheffler's trickles on to the front edge of the green, leaving a 12-footer for birdie.

Spaun, meanwhile, plays a gorgeous second to three-feet. That will help settle his nerves. Rahm is the final player to play and, following the Major champion, the Spaniard goes past the hole, leaving a 15-footer coming back for birdie.

USA GO 1-UP

Straka is first to play, with his birdie attempt from off the green not troubling the hole. Following his putt, Rahm just misses his birdie, with it sliding by the left-side.

That leaves Scheffler and Spaun with putts to take the first hole and, after Scheffler misses, it leaves it up to Spaun to win the hole.

Faced with a short putt for birdie, he rattles it in and that's the win to the USA.

SECOND MATCH UNDERWAY

Rose is up first in match two and, with a driver in hand, he finds the fairway. His partner, Fleetwood, goes left into the rough, leaving similar shots to that of Rahm, Straka and Scheffler.

DeChambeau leads off the US side, with his tee shot around 30 yards past Rose's, landing in the middle of the fairway.

He is paired alongside US rookie, Ben Griffin, who plays a delightful tee shot that finishes in the center of the short grass, a few yards back of Rose.

SPAUN SECURES THE FIRST

USA IN TROUBLE AT THE SECOND

Spaun and Scheffler lead the first match but, at the second hole, they both pull their tee shots left and leave awkward approaches into the green.

Straka, meanwhile, finds the right-side of the fairway, leaving a nice angle into the flag. Rahm is also on the right-side, finding the rough with his drive.

BIRDIES AT THE FIRST

After some excellent approach shots from all four players in the second match, we end up with a tie.

USA's Griffin just missed his birdie putt, with Europe's Fleetwood rolling in a delightful 10-footer to secure the three.

It's down to DeChambeau to secure the halve, which he does via a solid six-footer. One of many birdies you feel...

NO NERVES FROM HOJGAARD

Aberg and Rasmus Hojgaard are representing Europe in the third game of the afternoon, with Hojgaard producing a huge drive on the first that finishes 20-yards from the green.

USA's Cameron Young is another rookie in this group, with his tee shot also miles down the fairway, leaving a flick with a wedge.

Thomas is the second American player to play, with his drive finding the right rough. He struggled this morning, so will want to make amends this afternoon.

SUPERB STRAKA

Straka chips-in at the second hole to bring the match back to all-square! The Austrian was just off the edge of the green, with his chip rattling the back of the hole and dropping in for birdie.

Europe move back to a tie in the opener!

BIRDIES FLOWING

We expected birdies this afternoon and it's certainly delivering!

Playing the par 3 third, Rahm produces the first birdie of the day at the hole and, after Spaun and Scheffler miss their attempts, it puts Europe 1-up after losing the first.

At the opening hole, Thomas and Hojgaard both birdie to halve in threes.

THE FINAL MATCH IS OFF

The final afternoon match is underway and, at the opener, Shane Lowry finds the left rough with his first competitive shot of the Ryder Cup.

He is paired alongside his good friend, McIlroy, who hits a monster opener that finishes just 10-yards short of the green!

Sam Burns and Cantlay are their opponents and, in terms of their tee shots, Burns is in the right rough, while Cantlay is on the fairway, albeit well back of the green.

LOVE THAT SEPP

RAHMBO IS FEELING IT

After an excellent birdie at the third, Rahm fires in a superb second at the par 5 fourth, which finishes around 15-feet away for eagle.

Spaun is in the bunker for the US team, with Scheffler needing to respond with a good shot. Just a few feet away from his opponent's tee shot, Scheffler goes left and finishes in the thick rough.

He is short-sided and will have a tough up-and-down coming up.

USA LEAD THE FINAL MATCH

Lowry's birdie attempt at the first hole is weak and comes up well short. That leaves it up to McIlroy, who pushes his birdie attempt well right, leading to a par.

That gives Burns and Cantlay putts to win the first, with Burns converting to move the American team 1-up.

In the second match, DeChambeau just misses his birdie attempt to win the hole, with their match still tied after three.

YOUNG BIRDIES THE SECOND

Just as the US team win the first in the final match, Young claims the second via a beautiful birdie.

Putting his approach to 15-feet, the Ryder Cup rookie rolls in his putt to send the home crowd into raptures. They now lead 1-up after two in the third game.

Up ahead, USA's Spaun birdies the fourth after getting up-and-down from the bunker. Rahm still has an eagle putt to win the hole, but it's short and finishes on the edge. Opportunity missed as Europe remain 1-up.

UNREAL FROM RORY

That's an insane shot from McIlroy at the second. Out of position, he manages to carve his approach around the tree and to six-feet for birdie.

They're one down to USA's Burns and Cantlay, who are both on the fairway. In terms of their second shots, Burns fires a wedge past the flag and it spins back to 15-feet. Cantlay, meanwhile, puts his second to 40-feet.

USA REMAIN 1-UP IN THIRD MATCH

Europe make a par at the par 3 third and get away with one.

Both Thomas and Young have birdie chances, but Thomas' just slides by the left-side. That leaves Young with a chance to win and, from a similar position to Rahm earlier, the American's putt just grazes the edge and stays out. That match remains 1-up in the US' favor.

BEAUTIFUL FROM SHANE

Shane Lowry has arrived at the Ryder Cup, with the Major winner holing a 20-footer for birdie at the par 4 second to win the hole. Europe move back into a tie after two.

EXCELLENT FROM RORY AND CANTLAY

Unbelievable shot from McIlroy at the third, with his long-iron from 220-yards finishing just three-feet from the hole.

That puts the pressure on the US side, with a birdie, likely, needed to halve. Burns goes left off the green, leaving a tough up-and-down, while Cantlay steps up and produces an excellent tee shot that finishes 15-feet from the flag.

HOW DID THAT NOT DROP?

That deserved to go in! Spaun has a putt to win the hole for the US side at the fifth but, somehow, it hits the right edge and horseshoes out. I don't know how that hasn't gone in, especially from 30-feet!

Following his miss, Scheffler hits a pretty poor putt that doesn't trouble the hole, with pars sharing the spoils.

BIG MISS FROM RORY

Wow... I did not expect that! After his incredible tee shot at the third, you'd expect Europe to move 1-up, especially as Burns and Cantlay fail to make birdie at the par 3.

Faced with four-foot for the win, McIlroy strikes his putt and it catches the left-edge, spinning out for the hole. That's a huge miss for Europe, who remain tied.

BIRDIES AT THE FOURTH

Both Aberg and Young birdie the par 5 fourth to tie the hole. That keeps the US Team 1-up in that match.

BRYSON MOVES USA 1-UP

Both Rose and Fleetwood can't birdie the par 4 fifth, with their attempts not scaring the hole.

Following an excellent approach, which finishes 13-feet from the flag, DeChambeau then drains his putt into the center of the hole for a birdie and a 1-up lead.

They are the second match out, meaning that USA are up in two games, down in one and tied in one.

SOME SHOT FROM JT

He may have struggled this morning, but that is an excellent shot from Thomas, who nearly holes his approach at the par 4 fifth.

From 190-yards, his effort pitches just inches from the flag and runs out to five-feet, leaving a great look at birdie.

BIRDIE FOR BRYSON

JT CONTINUES CHARGE

An excellent approach at the fifth is followed by a great putt from Thomas, who moves the American Team 2-up in the third match.

Along with that game, DeChambeau pounds a 360-yard drive through the fairway at the sixth, with a great approach leaving an equally great chance to move 2-up in the second match.

His putt, though, slides by and that's a big miss as he and Griffin remain 1-up against Fleetwood and Rose.

BRYSON BOOM

ANOTHER MISS FOR USA

It feels like USA are playing the better golf this afternoon but, so far, they only just lead two matches.

Burns has a chance to take the lead in the final game but, from eight-feet, his putt falls low and it's a par to tie the hole with Lowry and McIlroy.

Up ahead, Scheffler plays a delightful approach into the par 3 eighth, leaving a great chance to move back to a tie against Rahm and Straka.

ANOTHER CHANCE MISSED

It's the European Team who now miss a great chance, with Aberg's birdie attempt at the sixth brushing the right-edge of the hole.

Having seen Young and Thomas miss their birdie chances, that was a great opportunity to move back to 1-down, but a par for Aberg means the US side remain two clear.

WHAT A PASSAGE OF PLAY

Unreal golf from Ben Griffin and Justin Rose at the par 4 seventh and Straka at the par 4 eighth.

DeChambeau has been the main man on Friday afternoon but, on debut, Griffin holes a 56-footer for birdie that puts the pressure on Team Europe. Once again though, it's Rose who is up for the challenge, as he holes a 40-footer to share the hole! That match remains 1-up in USA's favor.

Seconds later, Straka drains a 48-foot putt for birdie and puts the pressure on Scheffler, who fails to convert from 10-foot. Europe go 2-up in that match.

CLUTCH FROM ROSEY

AND HERE IS GRIFFIN'S EFFORT

GET IN RORY

He's missed some good chances early on but that is a superb putt from McIlroy at the sixth!

Hitting it to 12-feet with his approach, he slams in the birdie putt to move the European Team 1-up, meaning that they are up in two and down in two.

HE'S FEELING IT

MISSED CHANCES AT THE NINTH

There's been plenty of chances for players to win their respective holes and, at the ninth, Spaun and Scheffler have a great chance to birdie, but both miss.

Faced with 20-feet for birdie, Spaun's putt is good, but doesn't break, while Scheffler's birdie attempt is always low.

That leaves Europe with an opportunity to move 3-up, with Rahm leaving himself a 12-footer. Once again, it's a great putt but, somehow, it slides left and misses. The opening match remains 2-up in Europe's favor going into the back nine.

RORY IS IN THE ZONE

That's more like it! He's just holed an excellent putt at the sixth and, at the seventh, he drains a 25-footer for birdie and to move himself and Lowry 2-up.

LOWRY IN CLOSE

At the par-3 8th, Lowry fires a dart into maybe 10 feet and he'll have a great look at birdie shortly. McIlroy pushes one out to the right but receives a very friendly bounce into the rough, from where he may be able to chip close, if not in. From a US perspective, Burns is 30 feet or so away, right in the middle of the dancefloor. Cantlay will be chipping from over the back...

STRONG SPANISH HANDS

At the 10th, Rahm gouges his ball out of the thick fairway rough with a wedge to the front edge of the green and he'll have a look at birdie. That's impressive strength.

CHANCE FOR EUROPE

Cantlay has chipped eight feet past while Burns nestles his birdie try from range up close. McIlroy can be aggressive with his chip with Lowry in tight.

The Northern Irishman gives it a great try, but it slides a couple of inches right of target. Over to Lowry...

POOR EFFORT

Lowry hates it right off the blade. The ball fades away to the right and it'll be a tied hole at the eighth.

CLASS FROM CAMERON

At the ninth, and with the ball just above his feet, Cam Young draws a wonderful approach in towards the target and watches the ball slam on the brakes a few feet out. That should be a birdie.

But will it be a hole victory? Not if Aberg has got anything to do with it. The Swede nonchalantly clips his own approach underneath the hole and has a good chance of his own.

BIG CHANCE FOR THE US

Hojgaard is off target from the other side of the ninth green while Aberg fails to convert his excellent approach. Now, can Cam Young send the US 3up in the third match?...

THIRD MATCH 3UP

Rookie Young confidently sinks his birdie putt and the roars explode from the fans! Keegan Bradley, who is watching on, joins them with a passionate celebration. The home team are feeling pretty good about their chances in that match now.

AMAZING APPROACHES

At the 11th, Spaun and Straka are not really factors thanks to poor shots at various points. However, their playing partners are going toe-to-toe with some exceptional play.

Rahm sticks one in tight from 106 yards out of the first cut. Scheffler says 'watch this, Rahmbo' and throws his effort from 104 over the top of the flag before zipping it back right past the hole. The ball had a look but scurried past and ends right on the fringe.

KIND-HEARTED BRYSON

Rose and Fleetwood both have chances to make the second match all square at the 10th, but neither are particularly close and DeChambeau - perhaps rather too kindly - says they can pick up their markers. Rose had at least two feet slightly down hill...

RAHM SINKS ANOTHER

After Scheffler showed Rahm the line with a missed putt from 15 feet at the 11th, the Spaniard gratefully takes advantage of the situation and drops his 12-foot birdie chance in to push Europe into a 3up lead with seven holes to play.

Elsewhere, Burns and Cantlay ask McIlroy to putt out a 1-2 foot try for a tie. McIlroy smiles as he taps home and makes a comment to Lowry as they touch fists. Noted.

PRESSURE ON

At the 11th, Fleetwood finds the front-right collar with the flag in the front-right corner, so it's not too bad. Following next, Rose lands one on the green and maybe eight feet away on a better line.

The US team do not do a great job of matching the European efforts. Griffin zips one too much and his ball flies off the green while DeChambeau rips his ball back past the two Euro balls and right up against the collar of rough. That will be awkward.

ALL SQUARE

The US pair make a mess of the 11th and Europe take advantage. DeChambeau tried to stab his ball towards the hole from a horrible lie, but it checked up on him and went nowhere.

From a foot or so closer, Fleetwood finds the right side of the hole with his putter and gives Rose a little nod as they make it all square.

CANTLAY CLAPS BACK

After McIlroy almost chips in from the left side, Burns ensures the half at the 10th before giving Cantlay a stress-free look at winning the hole from range. Cantlay duly pours it in and the Americans are only one down in the bottom match now...

USA FIRED UP

The third match is quickly getting out of hand for Europe and moving towards a first point of the afternoon for Team USA.

Thomas clips a lovely approach into the 11th, landing it under the hole, and follows up by draining the birdie putt for yet another hole win. Young and Thomas are now 4up against Aberg and Hojgaard. Neither European player has looked like holing a putt for a while now.

WELCOME TO THE PARTY

McIlroy has really shown up for the Europeans today, but Lowry now takes his turn to all-but guarantee a hole victory for the away side. The Irishman drops a wonderful approach into the 11th from just over 100 yards, reeling it back to three feet at most. McIlroy is also on the right surface as Cantlay and Burns need hole-outs from the rough and bunker, respectively.

LOWRY LOVES IT

Lowry holes out to push the bottom pair of Europeans back to two in front. After doing so, he points at an Irish flag being waved in the distance and bangs his chest passionately. That's what it's all about.

NOTHING TO SPLIT THEM

At the 12th, Ben Griffin is the closest American at 25 feet. He comfortably two-putts and asks Fleetwood the question.

From the fringe, Fleetwood can't quite replicate his earlier heroics and the two teams walk away all square once more. This second game is fascinating.

TENSION BUILDING

Rahm just pulls his eagle chance from eight feet at the par-5 13th and has two feet left for birdie to tie after Spaun almost holes out with a wedge from the fairway. There is no concession, despite the short range.

Rahm knocks it in anyway and the European pair stride off to the next. Meanwhile, Keegan Bradley whispers a message to Spaun and Scheffler. They're three down with five to play, so the captain knows they must make something happen sharpish.

SPAUN LEADS CHARGE

At the par-3 14th, Rahm goes long and left while Straka sees his ball tumble down the slope and further away from the hole.

Spaun suffers no such issue, though, firing his tee shot hole-high and 10 feet right. Scheffler is in the sand, but it shouldn't matter too much with Spaun in great shape.

HOME FAVORITE FIRING

In his wildest dreams, Cameron Young probably didn't see his Ryder Cup debut going this well. He's made yet another birdie putt to putt he and Thomas five up on Aberg and Hojgaard. The European pair look like they just want this to be over, they're struggling.

QUALITY APPROACHES

Two different approaches. Two different teams. Same high-quality approach.

Tommy Fleetwood clips his ball into six feet at the par-5 13th to give Europe a great chance of a hole victory. Meanwhile, at the 12th, Cantlay sticks one to kick-in range as he looks to pile the pressure on his European rivals.

STRAKA SHINES

That is stunning from Straka! The Austrian has been overshadowed by his playing partner so far today, but he finds a wonderful putt from 30 feet or so up the hill at the par-3 14th. It's a good job he did as well because Spaun made no mistake after his world-class approach.

AS YOU WERE

The second match continues to be incredibly close as Rose holes one from 12 feet for birdie. Griffin had chipped close just before, so it's only a half. It remains all square. So good, this match.

UNTIL THE END

Further to Cantlay's excellent approach earlier, the purposeful American tidies up from a couple of feet to halve the deficit once again. He and Schauffele will push McIlroy and Lowry all the way, don't you worry about that.

END IS NIGH

Young and Thomas are closing in on a 6&5 win over Aberg and Hojgaard. Young has been as impressive as the Scandinavian pair have been poor this afternoon.

Young is on the green while the two European players have gone cross-country.

ADVANTAGE FLEETWOOD

At the par-3 14th, Tommy Fleetwood sends a dart into about the same place Spaun was not too long ago. Spaun holed that. If Fleetwood can do the same, the English pair will move 1up with four holes to play.

Don't count out DeChambeau, though, with the Scientist down at the bottom end of the green.

TWO PUTTS FOR THE WIN

Young has two putts to close this one out at the par-5 13th. The odds are pretty short...

YOUNG/THOMAS WIN 6&5 OVER ABERG/HOJGAARD

The first putt didn't drop, but a tap-in second wasn't necessary as the concession is made. Cameron Young and Justin Thomas notch the USA's second point with aplomb. That was dominant with a capital D from Young, in particular.

ENGLISH DUO HIT THE FRONT

DeChambeau almost lights the place on fire with a MONSTER putt from the other side of the green at the 14th, but it lightly lips out!

After the noise settles down, Fleetwood calmly rocks his putter back and forth through the ball, watching it disappear for a 1up scoreline in Europe's favor.

ANYTHING YOU CAN DO

Now it's warming up! Scheffler sinks a long-range birdie try at the 15th, and he thinks the hole could be won with Rahm some 20 feet away. But, the World No.1 is out of luck as Rahm hammers his own birdie try into the back of the cup. The Spaniard has been sublime today for Team Europe.

PUTT-OFF AT 13

All four players are on the putting surface at the 13th - who will hold their nerve?

Lowry goes first but can't dribble one down into the hole. Cantlay can, though! The American asks the question of McIlroy from six feet. If he can't hole out, the match will return to AS...

MATCH TIED

How on earth has that stayed up?! McIlroy pokes his ball towards the hole and it looks as though it might just catch enough of the cup, only to do a 450-degree tour of the top before staying out... McIlroy can't believe it.

Team USA bounce off to the next hole knowing they've fought back from two down and have a chance to win now.

SHOCK MISS

This bottom match appeared - for all money - as though it was about to be flipped on its head in double-quick time. A superb tee shot at the par-3 14th from Cantlay had given the Americans a near-guaranteed birdie.

Neither McIlroy or Lowry were able to make a birdie themselves, so it was up to Cantlay to do the honors.

However. The American somehow misses from a yard and the Europeans escape!

RAHM/STRAKA DEFEAT SCHEFFLER/SPAUN 3&2

With all the drama in matches six and eight, it's easy to forget about Europe's leading pair in the top match. Rahm and Straka were excellent against a dogged Scheffler and Spaun, and they've finally jogged over the line thanks to a brilliant eight-foot putt from Sepp Straka at the 16th.

Europe now lead 4-2 and there are only two matches left to conclude today. Which way they will go remains very much up in the air, though...

SWEET SHOTS AT 16

All from roughly 150 yards, the four players involved in match two send their approach shots to approximately 15-20 feet. Fleetwood was followed by Griffin who led Rose and then DeChambeau. This will be a putt-off for the honors at 16. Should Europe win it, that will guarantee them the half...

WILD

Back at the 15th, Lowry over-fades his second shot and pushes it into the trodden-down rough way out to the right. That will be a tough chip onto the green, let me tell you.

SO CLOSE YET SO FAR

Rose pushes his birdie try up the hill and watches it wind quickly to the right as it nears the hole, but it doesn't turn in time and that'll be a par for Team Europe at the very least.

From the opposite side, Griffin suffers a similar fate. It's now down to Fleetwood or DeChambeau to stand up and be counted.

TOMMY ROARS

Over to you, Bryson DeChambeau! Fleetwood confidently pours his birdie try in and gives a roar of delight along with a fist pump. He knows how big that moment could be.

EUROPE GUARANTEE HALF

DeChambeau asks his ball to 'go!' but it doesn't listen and Europe go two up with two holes left.

CHANCE FOR CANTLAY

Lowry picks up his ball at the 15th, leaving McIlroy to try and make a birdie from 15-20 feet. He can't quite find it, though, as his ball turns away at the very last moment. That was a decent putt, but it didn't drop and Cantlay has another opportunity to steal a win.

TIDE MIGHT BE TURNING

After Rose and Fleetwood take the safe route into the par-3 17th, DeChambeau reminds everyone why he is absolute box office by dropping a wedge right next to the hole.

One of the Europeans will have to create another magic moment or this match will continue...

NO GOOD

It's wide right from Cantlay - never had a chance. The bottom match continues onto 16 all square.

TELL US YOUR THOUGHTS

There has been a lot of criticism online regarding NBC's Ryder Cup coverage today, with a fair amount of praise for Sky if you're watching in the UK. Let us know what your experience has been in the comments...

UP TO BRYSON

Rose is short with his effort from the fringe while Fleetwood also fails to give his putt a fair run at the hole from 30 feet. After Griffin's mid-range chance sails on by to the left, it's over to DeChambeau...

DECHAMBEAU DELIVERS

It wasn't the most convincing try from DeChambeau, but it goes in the right side and that's all that matters for Team USA! Arms and fists rocket skywards, and the massive crowd following this group lets the Europeans know just how important that moment was.

It's down to 18 with Europe 1up. Momentum is now with the USA, though.

SHANE SENDS ONE CLOSE

Lowry fires his approach into 10 feet at most on the 16th hole, giving McIlroy free reign to attack the flag. In response, Cantlay is pin-high but about double the distance.

STRAIGHT AS AN ARROW

Griffin, Fleetwood and Rose all hammer drives down the centre of the fairway at the 18th. Only DeChambeau is off target, and he's in that cabbage down the right, so his chances are now fully lie-dependent.

ADVANTAGE EUROPE

In the final match, Lowry and McIlroy are opposite sides of the hole but about the same distance away. McIlroy was given the green light to go for broke after Lowry's approach, and he accepted the invitation.

USA are up against it on the 16th green.

CANTLAY KEEPS US DREAM ALIVE

After Burns fails with his long-range try from the front edge, Cantlay tells his teammate not to worry and duly pours a fantastic putt in to boost the Americans' hopes.

It had to go in as well, with McIlroy sinking his own birdie putt moments later. All square going to 17!

TWO VERSUS ONE

This is golf of the absolute highest quality. Fleetwood sticks his second shot to six feet, maybe eight, before Rose gives Europe two bites at the cherry with an approach just a couple of feet further away.

But the US team isn't cooked. Griffin matches Fleetwood's effort and we will have a two versus one putt-off to decide the fate of this second match.

NIP AND TUCK

All four players find the dance floor at the par-3 17th. Burns and McIlroy are closest for their respective teams, but Burns is in prime position.

FLEETWOOD/ROSE DEFEAT GRIFFIN/DECHAMBEAU 1UP

There was no real chance for any drama to build in the second match as Rose drains his birdie try after DeChambeau failed to hole out from the sand. The Europeans win 1up and that makes it 5-2 overall.

One match to go.

LONG-RANGE PUTTS MISS

Cantlay misses to the right before Lowry does the same. There wasn't as much movement in that as either player thought. Over to McIlroy and Burns...

MCILROY MAKES IT

After slow and mildly disturbing chants of "Rooorrry, Roooorryy" from the home crowd, McIlroy focuses on the task in hand and rolls his putt home. That is clutch.

JUST ENOUGH

Burns is arguably the best putter in the world, and he delivers when it matters most at the 17th. From 10 feet or so, he just catches enough of the left side of the hole to ensure the match stays all square going down 18. Are you not entertained?! This is amazing!

NOTHING IN IT

The drives are away. McIlroy is in the best place - down Broadway and furthest along. Lowry is in the left rough, but it looked as though his ball settled down, so Europe's hopes could all rest on McIlroy.

Burns and Cantlay are nicely placed as well, although Burns is in the right first cut and will face a slightly tougher angle into the pin.

BURNS VS MCILROY

Cantlay produces a horrible shot to find the bunker with his second, so he's likely out of this hole now. Meanwhile, Lowry is in no man's land in the middle of the green.

After Burns sticks his approach to 15 feet, McIlroy drops his second to 14.5 feet. It will most likely be Burns v McIlroy to decide how this final match of the day ends...

ONE-PUTT SHOOTOUT

Cantlay's bunker shot is decent, but not good enough. The same is true for Lowry and his putt, which just tails off at the end.

Burns to go first in the putt-off.

BURNS MISSES

No good from Burns, who misses right. McIlroy now knows the line, too.

What can he produce as the sun begins to set?

MATCH TIED

Burns misses right, McIlroy misses left. In a way, that's the fairest result.

There will be no histrionics or unnecessary drama to end day one, just a brilliant Ryder Cup match played in the right spirit until the last.

LOTS OF GOLF LEFT

No matter which side you're supporting, the message remains clear - this one is nowhere near over.

SATURDAY MORNING PAIRINGS

SHOULD KEEGAN BRADLEY BE WORRIED?

Despite a poor first day, Keegan Bradley is keeping faith with two pairings which came up empty on Friday - Collin Morikawa/Harris English and Scottie Scheffler/Russell Henley. Will they fare any better on Saturday or is the writing already on the wall for Team USA?

Golf Monthly's news editor, Elliott Heath has penned a story weighing up that very subject which you can read here.

SATURDAY FOURSOMES PAIRINGS:

GOOD MORNING

Well, what a day that was?!

Hello and welcome to the second day of the 2025 Ryder Cup, where Keegan Bradley's USA have somewhat of a mountain to climb to get themselves back into things for Sunday's singles.

We have almost the same four pairings on both sides going out this morning and the US will be hoping to at least get a 2-2 tie after losing 3-1 yesterday morning.

What have I been writing about? Check out a couple of pieces...

SOME CONCERNING STATS FOR KEEGAN BRADLEY

  • The Europeans have won each of the last six Ryder Cups in which they had a lead at the end of Day 1. The last time they did not win under that scenario was in 1999, when they led 6-2 after the first two sessions.
  • The team that has led at the end of the second session has won each of the last five Ryder Cups.
  • Under the current 28-point format, only one team has overcome a 5.5 - 2.5 deficit (or worse) to win a Ryder Cup. That was Ben Crenshaw’s American squad in 1999 at The Country Club which trailed 6-2 at the end of two sessions.

WHAT BRADLEY SAID AFTER DAY ONE:

"We have a plan. We're going to stick to it. I really like how the players are falling out, and we've got to just go out there tomorrow and make a few more putts and it'll be a whole different story.

"The message to the team is things just got started. We still have a long way to go. 75 percent of the points are still available.

"We can just turn this thing around in one quick session. You go out tomorrow and you try to win one session, then you try to win the next one. You don't need to get all four points in one session."

FITZPATRICK FIRST ON THE RANGE

HOW WILL THE COURSE PLAY TODAY?

Bethpage was truly remarkable yesterday with the rough almost being a benefit due to the amount of spin players were generating with their approaches into the soft and soaked greens.

It was no US Open setup, that's for sure.

The greens will have dried out a little come later this morning but I'd imagine we'll see more of the same. Could they be faster today?

Keegan Bradley was concerned about how few putts his side holed so perhaps a change in green speed could help.

NOT LONG TO GO NOW

Just 20 minutes remaining until the first tee shot is struck this morning, with DeChambeau and Young taking on Fitzpatrick and Aberg.

THE ROUGH HASN'T BEEN CUT

Wayne Riley says on the Sky broadcast that the rough has not been cut overnight at Bethpage.

He also does not think anybody will drive the green this morning with the heavy air.

"I don't care if he's Hulk Hogan, King Kong, he isn't reaching this green," on whether DeChambeau can get there.

GREAT ATMOSPHERE AGAIN

Jim Furyk has just been doing some impressive crowd engagement, getting each section to chant their letter: U-S-A.

The 1st tee is absolutely packed, the music is blaring and the players will be getting underway in just over 10 minutes' time.

PAUL MCGINLEY:

Paul McGinley is backing Europe to win the opening foursomes session 3-1 again today as long as the players show up with the same confidence and concentration.

"We've got to match what we did yesterday. Yesterday was fantastic," Paul McGinley says.

LOVING EUROPE'S COLORS TODAY

It's a burnt orange top and navy bottoms/cap. Very smart.

CROWD WANT BRYSON

The crowd are chanting: DECHAMBEAU, DECHAMBEAU, DECHAMBEAU!

And here they come, DeChambeau and Young make their way to the tee. Incredible atmosphere.

The Americans in navy polos/caps and white pants today.

WE'RE UNDERWAY!

Ludvig Aberg hits the opening tee shot of day two and he has leaked it up the right. That could be tricky, especially with the pin tucked to the right. Not a great start.

DeChambeau with the big stick in hand...and it's a beauty! Finds the fairway to leave Young around 50 yards. Advantage USA.

DECHAMBEAU AND YOUNG'S ENTRANCE:

LUKE DONALD:

"We have a plan depending on how this morning goes either way," Donald says, hinting that he does not yet know which four pairings he will go with in the afternoon.

If Europe wins 3-1 this morning, expect the big guns to be rested later as Rahm, Fleetwood and McIlroy have played every session so far.

If USA fights back, we could see those three back out again and playing all five sessions.

USA UP FIRST

Cameron Young from 70 yards... WOW! He hits it to within 6-inches.

BRILLIANT FROM FITZPATRICK

From 70 yards himself in the rough, the Englishman hits a gorgeous pitch shot over the bunker that stops around 8ft past the pin. Aberg will need to hole to tie.

LUDVIG ABERG TO TIE THE 1ST

The Swede steps up from 8ft on this left-to-righter and he holes it!

What a start. A big fist-pump there from Aberg too.

GAME 2 ON THE TEE

"I'm astounded to see this American pairing," Andrew Coltart says of the Morikawa-English pairing that is about to face Fleetwood and McIlroy.

RORY MCILROY ON THE TEE

The Masters champion drills one up the left which worrying flies straight into the fans. I hope everyone is okay.

That'll be absolutely fine and leaves a great angle in.

Harris English up next, and the American finds the right semi-rough.

GAME ONE INTO THE 2ND

Ludvig Aberg spins it off the front of the green with his approach shot in as DeChambeau does the exact same. His spins back even further into the rough, with the Europeans in the semi.

1ST TEE LOOKING SPECTACULAR THIS MORNING

MCILROY BLOWING KISSES TO THE FANS

Brilliant.

DECHAMBEAU HOLES ON 2 TO TIE

After spinning it back off the front, Cam Young's chip ran a good 5-6ft by and DeChambeau holes.

Tommy Fleetwood misses the green to the right with his approach into the 1st by a yard or so, as Morikawa's wedge shot finishes about 15ft long.

MCILROY LIPS OUT AS USA 1UP

The Northern Irishman's chip shot somehow doesn't drop after a brutal lip-out.

Harris English then converts from 14ft to go 1UP!

CAM YOUNG CHIP-IN!

Cameron Young chips in from the fringe on the 3rd hole to put the USA 1up in the opening match.

GREAT START FOR THE AMERICANS

It's very, very early but Keegan Bradley will be very happy, and relieved, by how his team have started so far.

MATCH 3 NOW UNDERWAY

Jon Rahm leaks his drive up the right as Xander Schauffele follows him into the rough, too.

MCILROY AND ENGLISH BOTH SHORT ON 2

Both men come up short on 2, just like the first group, with Harris English seeing his ball spin all the way back.

TAKE A BOW TYRRELL HATTON

The Englishman wedges it in to a foot on the opening hole from the right rough. Cantlay goes around 15ft long so Schauffele must hole that to halve.

TOMMY FLEETWOOD!

From the front fringe on 2, Fleetwood finds the center of the cup to get Fleetwood Mac back all-square. Phenomenal.

RAHM/HATTON 1 UP

Schauffele's putt from 20ft comes up shy so it's a win for the Europeans in game 3.

Meanwhile, Matt Fitzpatrick has just chipped it stone-dead on the 4th for birdie, meaning DeChambeau will have 10ft to tie after finding the bunker with his 2nd shot on the par 5.

FIRST MATCH BACK TO ALL-SQUARE

DeChambeau's putt slides by on the right side at the par-5 4th so Aberg/Fitzpatrick claw one back.

McIlroy has just hit a stunning tee shot into the par-3 3rd to give Fleetwood 5ft for birdie. Morikawa has around 30ft after a solid tee shot from English.

FINAL GAME UNDERWAY

Viktor Hovland finds the fairway as Scottie Scheffler does the same.

Scheffler and Henley have changed their order, interestingly.

FLEETWOOD MAC 1UP

Fleetwood holes from 5ft on the 3rd after McIlroy's stunning approach. Morikawa was not able to hole from 30ft so it's 1up.

STUNNING FROM HENLEY INTO THE 1ST

The World No.3 has just wedged it tight into the 1st to barely 2ft. That'll be conceded.

MacIntyre has done similar but it has spun back to around 5ft so Hovland will need to hole that.

SCHAUFFELE SHORT MISS

Xander Schauffele lips out from 6ft at the 2nd and Rahm and Hatton go 2up.

GREAT PUTT FROM HOVLAND

Hovland holes from 5ft at the 1st for a birdie and they have not given Scheffler his putt from 3ft.

The World no.1 holes and we're tied in the final match.

TOMMY FLEETWOOD: THOUGHTS

Fleetwood came into the week as the 3rd-best golfer in the world in Data Golf's rankings, and he is playing like the best golfer on the entire planet so far this week. He has been truly remarkable.

EUROPE ON TOP

This feels like it has been a great start from Team USA but there is currently no red on the board.

Just remarkable from Europe once again.

As I write that, Hatton pours in a 20-footer at the 3rd to likely tie the par-3 in birdies after Schauffele hit a stunning approach.

Update: Cantlay holes and it's a halve in 2s.

RICH BEEM:

"We're getting kind of outclassed here."

RORY MCILROY ON THE 1ST TEE EARLIER:

BRILLIANT FROM MACINTYRE

MacIntyre rolls it in from 25ft on the 2nd to put Europe 1up in the final match.

That is the first birdie on the 2nd today after Hovland was the one player to actually get his ball to the hole, with everyone else either coming up short or spinning it back off the front.

Europe up in 3 matches now.

MCILROY ROLLS IN A BIG BIRDIE!

From around 25ft, Rory McIlroy converts at the 5th to put Fleetwood Mac 2up.

I can't stress how good Europe have been this morning. Absolutely phenomenal.

It seems like whatever USA throw at them, they've got an answer.

USA FIVE UNDER...BUT SIX DOWN

USA have been very good this morning but Europe have just been on an entirely different level.

Tommy Fleetwood legitimately looks like the best golfer in the world.

POOR FROM MCILROY

Rory McIlroy has just pushed a wedge shot into the 6th and ends up in the bunker.

That was poor, especially with the American pair around 25-30ft short of the pin.

EUROPE BOGEY!

Aberg and Fitzpatrick bogey the 7th and DeChambeau/Young take advantage with a par to go 1up.

We have some red on the board!

GOOD SAVE ON 6 FROM FLEETWOOD MAC

After McIlroy's poor wedge shot, Fleetwood Mac make a sandy par to remain 2up.

CAMERON YOUNG WITH A DART

A phenomenal high, towering draw into the front-left pin on the 8th from Young, which will leave DeChambeau with pretty much a tap-in birdie.

Fitzpatrick up next...wow. It's incredible and only a foot outside of Young's.

The golf this morning has been out of this world good.

RARE MISS FROM HATTON

Hatton has just pulled a short putt left on the 5th to hand USA back a hole.

PRESSURE PUTT FOR ABERG AT 8

From 5ft down the hill...and it lips out!

Bryson DeChambeau's putt was conceded and suddenly the first match is 2up to the Americans.

BIG PUTT FROM SCOTTIE

The World No.1 holes a 15-footer with a good amount of right-to-left break at the 4th for birdie and the crowd are really starting to get into this now.

Vikto Hovland with a pressure putt to follow Scheffler in from 7ft for the tie... dead center.

Europe stay 1up.

FLEETWOOD AGAIN!

Fleetwood holes from 20-feet at the 7th after a fairly poor pitch shot from McIlroy.

It leaves Collin Morikawa with around 12ft to halve the hole and the American pulls it left. That was a weak effort.

Fleetwood Mac 3up.

HATTON/RAHM REMAIN 1UP

USA birdies the 6th after Cantlay holes from 10ft to leave Hatton a pressure putt from 6ft and down the hill - especially after a short miss on the last.

The Englishman converts for a clutch response.

HANDING OVER...

Michael Weston will take you through the remainder of the foursomes session this morning.

A great companion while watching the golf...

BRADLEY TAKING SOME STICK

Was only a matter of time. The partnerships are being questioned now. They're getting beaten up out there - so this was inevitable. Hunter Mahan, in the Sky Sports commentary booth, surprised by the English/Morikawa paiting. 4 down against Fleetwood/Mc

LOOSE FROM ABERG

A chance on the 10th for Ludvig. 195 yards with pin high right the safe play. Maybe a mishit there, but it comes up short in a very awkward spot just over the bunker. It's the start of a little shift, with Schauffele and Cantlay getting back level with Rahm and Hatton.

SIGNS OF A CHANGE IN MOMENTUM?

Another loose one, this time from Hatton on the par-3 8th. Cantlay gave him a chance with a poor tee shot of his own, but Hatton's is even further left. Aberg tries to repair the damage on 10, but his distance putt pulls up short. DeChambeau tidies up and puts Team USA 3up in the top match.

SUCKER PUNCH!

Rahm's just played the shot of the match. Hatton left him in all kinds of trouble with the tee shot. Everyone on their feet for that one - he's holed it! Somehow the Europeans have won that hole. We'll bring you that shot shortly... incredible touch.

JUST WOW

This is the shot that Rahm has just pulled out, just as Cantlay and Schauffele were thinking of perhaps stealing the lead themselves. Take it away, Jon...

YOUNG LOVING THIS

Cameron Young just getting on with things. Regardless of the overall situation, he's got himself dialled in. Long way back for Aberg and Fitzpatrick in the top match. This DeChambeau/Young pairing has been one of the few positives so far for Bradley.

CANTLAY HITS BACK

Top stuff from Cantlay. Europe long into the heavy rough on 11 and he's all over the flag. After what happened on the last hole, though, we shouldn't assume this hole is done.

SOOO CLOSE

Scheffler inches from a 40-footer on 7. Great effort. I kind of expected to see that drop. Rahm can't repeat the heroics, leaving the door ajar for Schauffele. 15 feet, uphill, for the win... short. That was tentative. "That was weak, man," says Hunter Mahan. "That was gross." Bit harsh?

BIG FROM VIKTOR

Hovland rolls one in from the fringe on 8, puts pressure on Scheffler. The World No.1 can't respond and Europe retake a 2up lead. Another roar from the 11th as Fleetwood hits the flag with his approach. English tidies up after Morikawa's own fine approach. The result is a half. Pats on the back all round, there - great gaaalf.

PUTTS NOT DROPPING

Rahm has an opportunity for a half on 10. Makes it. Cantlay's putt looked good all the way, but it stays out. The US need to start making things happen and quick.

MCILROY DIALLED IN

Rory gets his ball inside the US, and they were in close! Match 2 is over... Fleetwood/Mc are both dialled in. Meanwhile, a mid range putt slips by from Scheffler. He's looking very frustrated with things right now. I will bring you some US highlights when there are some.

"THIS MATCH FEELS OVER"

Morikawa holds his nerve, rolls the 6-footer in. Fleetwood follows him in. Another hole safely ticked off. "This match feels over," says Mahan. He's not wrong.

SOMETHING TO CHEER ABOUT!

The top game is going USA's way. Aberg is in trouble in 13 and flies the green. He was put in a spot of bother, there. Some big cheers as he makes a bit of a mess with his escape shot. The US side need more mistakes like that from their opponents - but they need them to come in the other matches!

I LIKE THIS CROWD

They're just shown that insane chip again from Rahm on the 8th. They were booing and laughing! But they were also clapping - and shaking their heads in disbelief.

BIG HALF

That's the Scheffler we're used to seeing. Drains a mid range putt, although it was just for the half. Matches can turn on such moments - it stops MacIntyre and Hovland from going 3up.

PITCH PERFECT

Tommy Fleetwood is in the form of his life right now. It's about time we showed you one of his best shots of the day, of which there have been many.

Henley and Scheffler sense an opportunity in the bottom match as Bob MacIntyre flies the green by miles from 128 yards.

HISTORY MAKERS

Since 1979, no away side has win the opening three sessions. It's on, although Henley and Scheffler have just picked up a hole, reducing the deficit to one on the 11th. That all came from Bob's clumsy approach.

RORY FOR GLORY....

That was the match right there. Clumsy. Leaves Fleetwood with 4ft - and he misses. That's a gift. Can English and Morikawa get something out of this match, which was looking dead? Now just 3 down through 14. Still a mountain to climb, but there's a glimmer.

PLAYERS DOING THEIR BEST

There's no shortage of encouragement from the US players and those following the matches to gee the home fans up - and they always respond. At some point, though, the players are going to need to give them something to really cheers about. Apart from Young and DeChambeau, there aren't many positives out there right now for Keegan Bradley. Scheffler/Henley are just the 1 down, though, and we see a big reaction there from the World No.1.

HERE COMES SCOTTIE

Finally, the World No.1 has arrived. The strut has returned. MacIntyre and Hovland are about to find themselves in a real scrap to retain their advantage. Scottie stiffs his approach... all square? Decent reply from Hovland to 8ft.

BOB LOVING IT

Blows the fans a kiss. Scheffler's approach was a stunner, Bob does the business with the putter, though, and they escape with a half. Cracking matchplay golf, that.

CONCESSION

Bryson DeChambeau & Cameron Young beat Matt Fitzpatrick & Ludvig Aberg 4&2. Fleetwood/Mc 2up now just three to play... hello! What a putt from English! Now that's what we want to see...right? A proper contest.

FLEETWOOD/MC UNDER PRESSURE

"Shut the f*** up," says McIlroy. I think we had a shout of "Freeeeeeeedom" there - the one from Braveheart - and Rory isn't best placed. Backs off, gets jeered, fires a dart in. This match has become very interesting. Don't make Rory angry. I remember once having a disagreement with a mate on the course - couldn't hold the club afterwards. Maybe I'm soft (I'm definitely soft). How Rory managed to hit that wedge after being that mad is beyond me. I was half expecting him to air mail the green. Anyway, the bottom line is we have some short putts coming up...

DEAD CENTER

The final match is all sqaure! After Scheffler's approach, Henley steps up and slots it home.

MCILROY & FLEETWOOD BEAT ENGLISH & MORIKAWA 3&2

TOO GOOD

DeChambeau and Young were too good for their opponents today. What does it mean to win a point for your team? You can hear it - it's obviously a mix of pure joy and a certain amount of relief. Well played.

CAUTIOUS FROM RAHM

A very makable putt there for the Spaniard. It was downhill, and he opted for safety. No aggression in that stroke - very mid-to-high handicapper worried about the one coming back.

BIG FROM HOVLAND

The Norwegian calmly restores the lead for Team Europe, just as Henley and Scheffler were starting to motor. It was only 6ft but no putt under this kind of pressure is easy.

4-0

A nice record to have. Fleetwood/Mc are bankers.

SCORE UPDATE 3.5-6.5

This is how things stand with two matches still on the golf course. Big moment coming up for Scheffler.... he's been left miles away on the green, but it's absolutely Scottie range.

JOB DONE

Rahm & Hatton beat Schauffele and Cantlay 3&2.

EQUALLY IMPRESSIVE

And here's another impressive record.

A BEAUTY FROM BOB

Hovland's putt from the fringe didn't work out at all on 15, and it left his partner with a horrid downhill putt from about 12ft. That was clutch. All eyes now on this match. Three holes to go, Europe 1up.

CLOSING STAGES OF FOURSOMES

Hole 17. Viktor on the tee. Hates it. Door wiiiiide open. Bob's going to have a putt of some 75ft. This is Scheffler's moment. It's a 9.5/10. We could soon be going down 18 all square. 15ft for Henley.

TEE SHOT TO BLAME

Bob races the putt 6-7ft by. Massive chance now for the US to level the match on the 17th.

HUUUUGE!

Henley for the win. Misses left. Can Viktor make amends for his poor tee shot? Bob will also be annoyed he raced that putt by, even if he was putting from a different zip code. Possibly the biggest par save of Hovland's career - nails it.

DOWN 18 WE GO

Can the US grab a half?

HERE WE GO, THEN

18th fairway. Scheffler up first. A reminder, they're 1 down. 116 yards with a wedge of some kind - his club. He's hit a shocker. I don't think I've seen him ever hit a wedge that poorly - it's surely a mis strike, ends up in some messy stuff. Hovland wastes little time in firing his approach into the green, nicely below the hole. It's now simple: Henley has to chip in and hope Bob misses.

3.5-8.5

Not the session the US wanted, is it? MacIntyre and Hovland beat Henley and Scheffler 1up. What a match. Scottie back out in a bit, but he's been far from his best. Something very special needed from Bradley's troops this afternoon.

AFTERNOON PAIRINGS

IT'S ALMOST GO TIME

After a quick turnaround, it's go time in the afternoon four-balls, with the US side needing to win this session to have any chance going into the singles on Sunday.

ON THE TEE, TEAM EUROPE

McIlroy and Lowry get the Europeans underway this afternoon, with the duo facing off against Thomas and Young, who has been the only bright spark in this US side.

Lowry is on the tee first, with his drive finding the left side of the fairway. McIlroy, meanwhile, crushes his tee shot and is well down the hole, leaving around 40 yards in.

It's the Americans turn now, with Young up first. Like McIlroy, he takes an aggressive line over the corner and finds the fairway, a few yards back of McIlroy's. Thomas is the final player to play and he also finds the short grass.

HISTORY IN NEW YORK

ADVANTAGE USA

Lowry's approach comes up well short and spins off the green, with Thomas executing an average second that goes well past the flag, finishing 20-foot away.

Young is the next player to hit in and, from 70 yards, he puts his wedge to around five-foot below the flag. Once again, it's an excellent shot from the home hero.

McIlroy is the final player to hit and, with the boos ringing out, he sticks his wedge from 60 yards to 10-foot past the hole. It's advantage America.

PARS AT THE FIRST

Lowry plays a great chip that just comes up short. He guarantees the par, as does America's Thomas, who misses his putt on the low-side.

Realistically, McIlroy has to hole his putt for the tie, as Young is in close. Striking the attempt, it's on a good line but slides by the right edge.

That leaves Young with a great chance to put America ahead but, from five-foot, his attempt doesn't scare the hole, missing well left. The match is tied through one.

SECOND MATCH IS OFF

Rose and Fleetwood are paired together again on Saturday and, with their tee shots, the English duo find the fairway with both drives.

The US Team have stacked their second match, with Scheffler and DeChambeau paired together for the first time since 2021.

Scheffler's tee shot finds the fairway perfectly, while DeChambeau's drive is miles down there, landing and stopping around 40 yards short of the green.

ROUGH FOUND FOR EUROPE

Playing the second, both Lowry and McIlroy go left off the tee, finding the thick rough but with a good angle to the flag.

Young also goes left with a fairway wood in hand, while Thomas cuts his drive on to the right-edge of the fairway.

CLOSE APPROACH SHOTS

Both Rose and Fleetwood find the green with their second shots at the first, with Rose significantly closer than his playing partner.

Scheffler, who has lost all three matches this week, plays a delightful wedge to just outside gimme range, while DeChambeau puts his second in close. Europe will have to hole one of their attempts for the tie.

BIG PUTT FROM ROSEY

Fleetwood's birdie putt just slides by the right edge, but it does give a great read to Rose, who slams his putt in the back of the hole for a birdie three.

The American's putts weren't conceded, but Scheffler holes his birdie attempt to tie the first.

SECOND HOLE TIED IN PARS

McIlroy and Young put their approach shots to around 15-feet at the second hole, leaving mid-range putts for birdie.

First up is the European Team, with McIlroy's putt sliding left of the hole. Young has another chance to put the US ahead, but his attempt also goes left, meaning another tie in par.

RAHMBO ON THE TEE

Rahm and Straka won 3&2 yesterday against Spaun and Scheffler in the afternoon four-balls, with the European pair together again on Saturday.

They face Spaun and Schauffele and, at the first, Rahm finds the fairway, while Straka is in the right rough.

In terms of America, Spaun is on the left-edge of the fairway, while Schauffele cuts the corner and leaves a beautiful angle into the flag.

SHOT ROSEY

Beautiful approach from Rose at the second hole, as he clips a wedge from 110 yards to just a few feet.

Back at the first, Spaun hits a nice wedge to six feet, while Straka gets a huge flier and finds the back edge. That leaves a horrid putt coming back.

Schauffele is in the center of the fairway and spins a great wedge back to five feet. The pressure is on Rahm, but he's up to the task as he dead arms a wedge to three feet.

ANOTHER CHANCE MISSED IN THE OPENING MATCH

Thomas and Young have a huge advantage at the third, sticking their shots in tight at the par 3.

With McIlroy in for par, the US have a great chance to move 1-up, but Thomas' attempt lips out, while Young doesn't threaten the hole with his short putt.

HATTON IN FOR HOVLAND

Hovland was supposed to be alongside Fitzpatrick this afternoon, but it appears Hatton has replaced him. The reason for the substitution is due to the fact Hovland is suffering with a neck injury.

Either way, Fitzpatrick and Hatton face Burns and Cantlay and, up ahead, Rahm and Schauffele birdie to tie the opener.

ROSEY PUTS IT CLOSE AGAIN

Birdieing the first and second, Rose sets up an excellent chance for a third straight gain at the par 3, with the Englishman putting it to six-feet for birdie.

That puts the pressure on the US Team, with Scheffler sticking his approach to 15-feet and DeChambeau pulling his iron well left of the green.

EAGLE ATTEMPTS INCOMING

The first match remains tied and, at the par 5 fourth, Lowry, McIlroy and Thomas find the green with excellent long irons.

Young is in the right rough and, from 205-yards, his second is almost perfect, but pitches a couple of yards too far and rolls down the slope.

VIKTOR WITHDRAWS

Ongoing story, but Hovland has suffered a neck injury and won't be featuring this afternoon. It's unclear as to whether it's precautionary or a permanent fixture...

EUROPE GO 1-UP IN THE FIRST TWO MATCHES

Scheffler's birdie attempt is pacy and misses the hole on the left-side at the third, leaving Europe's Rose with a great chance to move 1-up.

From six-feet, it never leaves the hole and drops in for a third straight birdie. That puts Europe 1-up in the second game.

To add further, Lowry has just eagled the par 5 fourth via a delightful putt that goes in at pace. He gives it both barrels with the celebration, moving Europe 1-up!

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

"Due to a neck injury Viktor Hovland is unable to play Match #4 of this afternoon’s Four-Ball Matches. Tyrrell Hatton will be substituted for Viktor Hovland in Match #4.

"Per item 3.c) in the Captains Agreement:For Foursome and Four-Ball: It is agreed that in the event of illness, injury or other emergency reason to a player selected to play in a match, he may be substituted by another member of the team previously not selected, prior to the commencement of this match."

STRAKA MOVES EUROPE 1-UP

This is a perfect start for Europe, who now move 1-up in the third match, as Straka rolls in a 14-footer for birdie following a superb second.

NEAR ALBATROSS FROM BRYSON

That is a stunner from DeChambeau at the fourth, who nearly holes out for the albatross from 200 yards!

Striking a mid-iron, it pitches 10-feet short and rolls just past the left edge. That'll be an eagle for the US Team and, with Fleetwood and Rose in average positions, that game could be back to a tie.

GO ON SHANE

STRAKA MOVES EUROPE 1-UP

USA WIN THE FOURTH

The shot deserved from DeChambeau deserved to win and, after Fleetwood narrowly misses his eagle putt, it means the second match goes back to a tie after four holes.

BIG MISS FROM FITZY

Wow... Fitzpatrick plays a great shot into the second, leaving it just three-feet from the hole.

The putt is for the win and, from that range, you fancy him to make it; however, he rams it through the break and it misses on the high side. That match remains tied.

LOWRY IS ON FIRE

Following on from his eagle at the fourth, Lowry drains an eight-footer at the fifth for birdie to move the European Team 2-up through five holes.

He is pumped this afternoon and him and Rory lead Young and Thomas in the early stages.

KEEP IT GOING SHANE

ANOTHER PEACH FROM BRYSON AND SCOTTIE

Rose and Fleetwood find the green at the fifth, but leave lengthy birdie putts coming up.

The door is ajar for the Americans, and DeChambeau jumps through it via a great approach that spins to five-feet.

Following him in, Scheffler produces an approach of his own that finishes a similar length away. Advantage USA in that match.

AMERICA STARTING TO FEEL IT

Following Fleetwood and Rose's missed birdie putts at the fifth, DeChambeau has an opportunity to put USA 1-up, which he does via a short birdie putt.

Up ahead, Young has produced a gorgeous approach at the sixth, with an 80-yarder from the fairway finishing a few feet away. McIlroy and Lowry play decent wedge shots in, but it's advantage USA there.

FANS GETTING ROWDY

McIlroy is stood over his birdie putt at the sixth and, just as he's about to hit, a spectator shouts out forcing him to stand off the ball.

This has happened a few times now, with both McIlroy and Lowry enduring abuse from the home crowd.

LOVE IT SHANE

How do you respond to the crowd...? By holing putts! McIlroy missed his birdie attempt, but Lowry didn't, rolling in a 10-footer to tie the hole following Young's birdie.

Behind them, Schauffele makes a 40-footer for eagle at the fourth to get their match back to a tie.

TOMMY AND ROSE FIGHTING BACK

DeChambeau and Scheffler secured the fourth and fifth, but Fleetwood and Rose are fighting back.

All four men find the fairway at the sixth and, with their second shots, the Europeans put their attempts to around five-feet.

Scheffler follows them with a great wedge, while DeChambeau lands it at the hole, but it spins off the front edge of the green.

ANOTHER ONE FOR LOWRY

SHARED IN BIRDIES

DeChambeau just misses his birdie attempt at the sixth, which puts the pressure on Scheffler to make his putt from six-feet.

Taking the putter back, it never looks anywhere else as it rolls end-over-end into the center of the cup. That leaves it up to Rose and Fleetwood to tie the hole, and that's what Rose does, as he makes yet another birdie.

This is a quality match, as the USA are six-under and the Europeans five-under.

ANOTHER CHANCE MISSED IN THE FINAL MATCH

Fitzpatrick has had two great chances to give Europe the lead but, both times, has missed.

Playing a great approach in at the par 5 fourth, he leaves himself a nice look at eagle. Faced with 12-foot for the victory, he pulls it left, which means the hole is tied in fours.

It remains as a tie in the final game.

EXCELLENT FROM YOUNG

He's been the best player for the Americans and, at the seventh, Young rolls in a 35-footer for birdie that moves the US Team to 1-down.

McIlroy and Lowry made comfortable pars, but it's the US rookie who is stepping up.

ANOTHER DART FROM SHANE

Both Young and Thomas go long of the green at the par 3 eighth, with both leaving extremely difficult shots coming up.

After losing the seventh, McIlroy and Lowry will want to react and that's what the latter does, firing a great long iron to the back of the green, finishing 15-feet from the hole. McIlroy also follows him, finding the right side for a birdie look.

MEGA PUTT

ROSE CLAIMS THE WIN FOR EUROPE

Rose plays a magnificent approach into the seventh and, after DeChambeau's birdie attempt lips out, it leaves the Englishman with a chance to secure the win.

It's never in doubt, with the seven-time Ryder Cupper rolling it in the middle to bring their match back to tied.

At the eighth, both McIlroy and Lowry miss their birdie putts, leaving Young and Thomas with a chance to tie. Young misses, but Thomas doesn't, rolling in a 10-footer for a three.

In the final game, Cantlay has a great chance to put the Americans 1-up, but his effort catches the left side and spins out. That game remains tied.

SIMPLY LOVELY

ADVANTAGE EUROPE IN THE FINAL GAME

Cantlay finds the green from an awkward stance at the sixth, with his shot finishing 20-foot from the flag. His partner, Burns, is buried in the rough and can only find the front bunker.

The door is ajar for Hatton and Fitzpatrick, who both find the heart of the green, leaving 10-and-15-footers for a birdie three.

MISSED CHANCE...AGAIN

America make par in the final match, but Hatton and Fitzpatrick can't convert their putts for the win. The match remains tied through six.

SEVEN BIRDIES NOW FOR ROSEY

What is this man doing! Wow, faced with a swinging 15-footer for birdie at the eighth, Rose strikes his putt and is walking it in at the halfway stage!

It goes in at dead weight for a seventh birdie in eight holes, moving himself and Fleetwood 1-up.

WALKING IT IN

JT IS FIRED UP AS USA TIE THE FIRST GAME

The US and Europeans have great looks at birdie on the ninth and, striking first, McIlroy's putt goes left and clips the edge of the hole.

It gives Thomas the read, which he makes the most of, as he rolls in the birdie putt and sends the surrounding crowds into raptures.

Lowry has a chance to match the American, and his putt is online all the way, but dives left and now means it's a tie in the top match.

SUPERB STRAKA

These matches are tight and, at the seventh, Straka rolls in an excellent birdie putt to win the hole and move the Europeans 1-up in that game.

QUALITY OFF THE SCALE

Match two, at the 8th hole, sees three of the four players involved drop their approach shots within 10 feet.

In the bottom match, Cantlay whips his ball out of the greenside bunker and almost holes out. This has been the tightest session by a mile so far, and the quality of the golf has arguably been the best, too.

EVERYONE MISSING

Despite what I just said, the last few moments has seen nothing but missed putts, really. Cantlay was the first guilty party before Spaun, Fleetwood and Rahm all missed chances to pile the pressure on.

Europe remain up in two while the other couple of matches are all square still.

NO CHANGE IN TOP MATCH

With Lowry out of the hole, McIlroy goes first from across state at the 10th but narrowly misses his target. The US pairing both have chances to capitalize from a fair way out, but neither can do so.

OFF THE STICK

Fleetwood has guaranteed Europe a birdie at the 10th via a simply stunning approach from the middle of the fairway. The pin is tucked right at the front, too, so it's a tough one to access.

Not to be intimidated, Scheffler flies one right at it. But it's almost too close, striking the base of the pin and flying backwards into the rough. Brutal.

DIRTY LIP OUT

Scheffler takes the flag out at the 10th and tries to chip in from the thick stuff. He's so close in doing so as well, but it just burns the edge.

ROSEWOOD 2UP

DeChambeau has to make a birdie from 30 feet or so to tie the hole after Fleetwood's class approach, but he doesn't really come that close and the Europeans give themselves a little breathing room in the second match.

BREATHING ROOM

More success for the Europeans in the third match. Jon Rahm floats a wonderful second into the ninth and has inside 10 feet for birdie. He calmly rolls it home for a three to help he and Straka go up by two.

LOWRY MAKES THE SAVE

Thomas has a decent chance to put some red on the board in the top match via a 10-12 foot birdie putt from near the fringe, but he just pushes it right and it'll be a par for the Americans at the 11th.

McIlroy and Lowry have two knee-knockers remaining for par, and the former doesn't manage to make his drop. Fortunately for McIlroy - who is being given a really rough ride by the home fans - he is bailed out by a cool putt from Lowry. The Irishman looks up briefly and glares at the crowd before walking off.

In among that, Thomas asked for the crowd to be quiet while the two players hit their shots. Good sportsmanship from JT.

FITZPATRICK STARTS FIRING

The English pair of Fitzpatrick and Hatton have found a nice rhythm around the turn, and it's Fitzpatrick who will have the chance to put a third strip of blue on the scoreboard after Cantlay and Burns both miss makeable chances of their own at the ninth.

Fitzpatrick just about finds enough of the hole for it to drop and he gestures for everyone to just calm down a little bit as a smiling Hatton thanks him for bailing the LIV man out of trouble.

BRYSON EXPLODES

As Fleetwood and Rose make a bit of a mess of the 11th, DeChambeau and Scheffler swoop in like a bald eagle to snatch a hole victory.

DeChambeau plays perfect golf to give himself a very good look at birdie and, after making the putt, he absolutely explodes with joy. DeChambeau fist pumps and hollers towards the crowd, who give the emotion right back.

The Americans are now only one down with seven holes to play...

SPAUN FROM DOWN TOWN

Wow, here comes the US team! In the third match, Spaun drains one from 40 feet to pile the pressure on Straka and Rahm.

The Austrian can't find the target, so it's over to Rahm to save his team.

DEFICIT HALVED

The fans are getting really excited now! Jon Rahm loses a hole on the back nine for the first time this week after failing to make his ball drop from 15 feet. The US need more putts like Spaun's to go in if they are to cause Europe real problems - could that be the first of many? Keegan Bradley will certainly hope so.

ON FIRE

The best putter on the PGA Tour, Burns, has long been overdue a make from range, and he's finally earned his reward via a hole-out from miles away at the 10th.

Unfortunately for Burns, Fitzpatrick matches him stride for stride and ties the hole. He's looked impressive with the flat stick today.

CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY

According to the broadcast, one fan just called Justin Rose 'Grandpa'. The 45-year-old didn't take too kindly to that moniker, apparently, and responded by dropping his approach to kick-in range at the 12th. Scheffler and DeChambeau need something special in response.

MOMENTUM SWINGS BACK

Moments after Straka rolls home a tricky par save at the 11th to tie the hole and maintain Europe's 1up lead in match three, DeChambeau fails to convert from 25 feet or so in match two, and Fleetwood moves in to win the hole with Rose in even closer than his six feet.

The USA were having a good time not too long ago, but Europe have quickly blunted that in the last five minutes.

CANTLAY IN CLOSE

Patrick Cantlay eyes his approach at the 11th up and down in double-quick time. He has good reason to as it lands on the left edge, giving him a very nice look at birdie and a return to AS.

TIME TO STRIKE

McIlroy has not looked the same player since that incident with the fans on the sixth green. He seems distracted. With a chance to card a birdie at the par-5 13th, McIlroy pulls it left and still has a few feet left for par.

Trying to paint some red on the board, Young wanders a putt right to the hole's edge but leave it in the jaws.

With McIlroy not at the races and Lowry struggling as well, Thomas and Young have to strike now.

COUPLE OF CRACKERS

The par-3 14th is an ace hole today. The flag is right at the front and - at just 135 - it's a spun wedge away from the tee box. While Lowry and Burns fail in their quest to end close, Thomas and McIlroy most certainly do not.

Both have inside 12 feet left, I'd say, but you'd have to fancy Thomas in this situation - given how the pair have putted over the past few holes...

STRAKA AND RAHM SURVIVE

Spaun had a really good chance to restore parity in the third match via a 15-foot putt, but he somehow misses just moments after draining that 40-foot try. That's golf.

ALL BLUE

Fleetwood holes an absolute monster right-to-left curler at the 12th when Europe were rank outsiders at that hole. He and Rose celebrate with some real fervour ahead of Scheffler's tap-in tie.

Moments later, a certain Rory McIlroy takes his turn to give it back to the US crowd after making birdie at the 13th. The Northern Irishman offered nothing ahead of picking the ball out of the cup, but once he had, the five-time Major winner absolutely exploded. I dare say there may have been an expletive or two involved as well. McIlroy is ticking, no doubt.

Europe lead in all four matches.

SLIGHT ADVANTAGE EUROPE

The second match reaches the par-3 14th and Fleetwood puts the visitors in the driving seat via a tee shot which looks as though it might have a chance of going in at first. In the end, it settles a few feet away up the hill.

But don't count out Bryson. DeChambeau draws a beautiful wedge into the green which zips back and stops just a little further away down the slope.

ROSE IN FULL BLOOM

There's no need for Fleetwood's world-class tee shot at the 14th as Rose pours one in from 20 feet up the hill. Birdie for the men in burnt orange polos.

Over to you, Bryson...

GIVEN AWAY

Oh, goodness me. DeChambeau pushes his short birdie try to the right and Rosewood go three up with four to play. The LIV man's putter has been stone cold over the past few holes. Worrying times for the US.

HOW IS YOUR LUCK?

McIlroy's drive at the 15th was disgustingly pulled. It missed the fairway, the rough and nearly evaded the hospitality tents as well. After a free drop that put him back on the trampled down grass, McIlroy takes advantage of his ability and the front pin to pull off one of the shots of the week.

He draws his approach like a banana and watches it trickle back down the hill to six feet at most. If Lowry misses from eight feet, you'd fancy that one to drop.

PASSIONS RIDING HIGH

It's not going the USA's way, but that won't stop the American players fighting until the last. Thomas drains his birdie putt from the fringe at the 15th to put a little more pressure on McIlroy and Lowry before roaring with delight.

But it's a case of 'anything you can do, I can do better' - both with the putt and celebration - as Lowry sees his putt drop for a tie prior to bellowing in the direction of the fans. Three holes to go and still anything could yet happen in that top match.

RAHM AND STRAKA ROLLING

Back to the par-3 14th, Team Europe's pair have looks from around the same spot that McIlroy holed from not too long ago. The hole is far from over, mind, with Spaun in makeable range, too.

MATCH CONTINUES

Rose has holed everything today, and that form continues at the 15th despite a fair amount of preparation time, let's say.

In order to keep the match alive, DeChambeau has to match Rose from 15-20 feet, and he does! What bravery from DeChambeau.

FLASH POINT

After holing out, DeChambeau lets himself down by trying to start something that wasn't there with Rose on the way to the next hole. It all kicked off a little because Rose asked if DeChambeau's caddie could move back out of his line of vision just before holing that putt and the Americans felt Rose was taking an excessive amount of time over his putt.

The LIV man became very animated and it all became a little ugly, with the likes of Ted Scott and Francesco Molinari moving in to make their feelings known. Scott was particularly upset about something and appeared to shove someone in the European camp a little. It was all a little silly. Thankfully, after the tension simmers down somewhat, the match is back underway.

BACK TO THE GOLF

At the par-3 17th, Lowry has produced a superb tee shot which could have iced the top match in Europe's favor. McIlroy will show him the line from a little more than double the distance, but he has to make it after Thomas almost makes an ace. That will be conceded, so it's over to the Europeans to hold onto their advantage.

BURNS CHIP-IN

What a moment from Sam Burns! The American chips in at the 14th to force Hatton into a must-make putt. He can't manage it and the bottom match is back to all square!

ICE-COOL

McIlroy can't find the hole with his effort at the 17th, forcing Lowry to make or it will be a one-hole shootout for the point.

Despite not playing at his highest level today, Lowry stands up when it matters most and drains it. The worst Europe can do now is a half in the top match.

ROSE AND FLEETWOOD DEFEAT SCHEFFLER AND DECHAMBEAU

Scheffler comes up short with his birdie try and DeChambeau was already out of the hole, leaving Fleetwood with a short putt to wrap up the match at the 16th. He can't take it, but his mate, Justin Rose certainly can and that's another point on the board for the Europeans.

9.5 - 3.5

ADVANTAGE EUROPE

The approaches into 18 have varied greatly in terms of quality. Lowry has come to the party at the sharp end of this one and has five feet left to close this one out. Young chunked his from 95 and then chunks his chip as well.

McIlroy has a potential chance down the hill while Thomas has a possible chance from the front fringe. You'd rather have Europe's putts, though.

LOWRY AND MCILROY DEFEAT THOMAS AND YOUNG

Thomas has to make from the fringe to even stand half a chance of snatching a half, but he can't quite do it and the caps come off before handshakes are offered. Europe gladly accept and that's two from two in the afternoon for Donald's men.

This has been a stunning Ryder Cup so far. Not even the most optimistic of European fans could have predicted this kind of scoreline.

TWO MATCHES TO GO

Keegan Bradley wears the expression of a troubled man as he speaks into his mic at the edge of one green. There are two matches still in play, but one is in Europe's favor and the other is all square. Anyone of a US persuasion or, indeed, the neutral would like to see two red poinst come in before the end.

At 16, Schauffele tries to make a huge putt for the win, but it just slides by. That was a great effort. Shortly before, Straka had produced something very similar.

Spaun still has a chance, though. Can he make this one all square? Not quite. That looked good for 90% of its journey.

NOT GIVING UP

The par-3 17th is playing 160 yards without a breath of wind out there at the moment. It's around a stock 8-iron for those with club in hand, and the Americans make it look easy up first. Spaun is in tight at three feet while Schauffele has 15 feet, maybe.

Straka has plenty of work to do thanks to his slightly heavy approach, but Rahm gives Europe a fighting chance of retaining their lead thanks to a beautiful tee shot which rests no more than 12 feet away.

HATTON IN FOR THREE

At the 16th, Hatton rifles his 25-foot putt into the back of the cup with the US pair likely thinking they were favorites to win the hole. No matter what, that match will go to 17 AS.

CANTLAY RESPONDS

Patrick Cantlay is not one to give up easily, and he doesn't via a made putt after Burns misses. That one remains tied going down 17.

BACK TO ALL SQUARE

Rahm misses narrowly to the left at 17, giving Spaun the chance to take blue off the board from five feet. He duly does and the final two matches are now all square. Can the US generate some desperately required momentum heading into the singles?

DOWN TO THE WIRE

Sam Burns might have given the US a chance of a match victory with a sublime tee shot at the par-3 17th. His 9-iron sends the ball right over the top of the flag, and it drops just a few feet away from the hole.

In response, Fitzpatrick has an excellent chance himself from six feet while Hatton required help from the slope for his own decent look. Cantlay is a little out to the right, but there's every chance he will hole that first up.

PATTY ICE

And there it is from Cantlay! His putter has warmed up at just the right time, just as it so often does at the Ryder Cup. Cantlay rolls in the birdie once again to pile all of the pressure on the Europeans.

HATTON REPLIES

Oohh, they're all going in now! Tyrrell Hatton gently nudges his ball down the slope and watches it drop in the front door for a tie. The bottom match, which is racing the sun somewhat, will go down 18 all square.

WORLD CLASS

JJ Spaun has really stood up to be counted today. He's battled brilliantly and will give his team the chance for a half at the very least. From just inside 100 yards on 18, Spaun floats one into the bank and rips it back down to the hole's side.

It looks as though it could be a full point for the Americans now after Straka spins his approach too much to the fringe and Rahm finds the front-left bunker. Much needed.

SPAUN AND SCHAUFFELE DEFEAT RAHM AND STRAKA

Rahm's attempted hole-out from the bunker wanders on past while Straka's stab out of the collar's edge rockets away from the target. Despite Rahm holing out for par on the way back, Spaun firmly slams the door from close range to notch a long-awaited full US point.

LOWRY AND MCILROY SPEAK

While DeChambeau and Scheffler have turned down media requests after their afternoon defeat, McIlroy and Lowry spoke to TV shortly after their narrow victory in the top match.

This is what they said...

Q. Shane, you exploded with the eagle on 4 and the emotions of the match just ran so high. How do you describe the intensity of what you just experienced the last few hours?

Lowry: "Yeah, it was intense. It was like something I’ve never experienced. But this is what I live for. This is it. This is, like, honestly, the reason I get up in the morning, for stuff like this. This is what I love doing.

"I love being a part of this team. I really want us to win this tournament. But that’s only a point towards victory. I think we still have a job to do. Obviously we have quite a big lead, but we need to keep the foot in the gas now and get over that line as quick as we can.

"Obviously I’m very happy and I’m enjoying this, but I’m going to go and cheer the boys in now and hopefully we can get a few more blue points on the board."

Q. Rory, you said Shane was there for you today. Did the crowds take it too far in your opinion?

McIlroy: "Look, you know, when you play an away Ryder Cup, it’s really, really challenging. It’s not for me to say.

"People can be their own judge of whether they took it too far or not. I’m just proud of us for being able to win today with what we had to go through."

FITZPATRICK AND HATTON LOOKING GOOD

It was Spaun's turn to produce the goods just now, but Europe will enjoy the final say on Saturday as Fitzpatrick and Hatton float two stunning approaches into three feet. The two Europeans are so in sync that Hatton's second shot actually bumped up against Fitzpatrick's.

HATTON AND FITZPATRICK DEFEAT BURNS AND CANTLAY

And that's how it ends. The two European golf balls are conceded and the US have two final chances to snatch a half. Cantlay's chip is a decent one but it rolls on by the right side. Meanwhile, Burns' putt is also a solid try, but it doesn't drop in the left edge.

Hats come off. Handshakes are offered. Europe go 11.5 - 4.5 heading into Singles Sunday.

HISTORY MAKERS

Ahead by 11.5 - 4.5, Team Europe have set a new record for the largest lead after two days at a Ryder Cup since 1979. The previous record was Team USA in 2021 at Whistling Straits (11 - 5).
