Ryanair strikes: Irish passengers facing travel chaos with pilots to walk out for two days

Thousands of Irish passengers face travel choas from next week as Ryanair pilots have voted to strike for two days.

Irish pilots for the budget airline will walk out from their jobs on August 22 and 23.

The strike will start at a minute past midnight on August 22 and will cause two days of air travel misery across Ireland and the UK.

Ryanair pilots, members of the Irish Airline Pilots' Association (IALPA) served strike notice on the company this evening, and said pilots would notify the company of further strike days in due course.

A strike in 2018 by Ryanair staff saw more 250 flights cancelled and widespread disruption. 35,000 passengers were affected.

The move comes after 94% of directly-employed Ryanair pilots voted to back industrial action in a long-running dispute over pay, working conditions and related issues.

Management at the airline are sitting down with representatives from the Fórsa trade union in a meeting mediated by Kieran Mulvey.

Fórsa is the parent union of the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (IALPA), which represents 180 Dublin-based pilots who are directly employed by Ryanair.

The airline’s chief people officer Eddie Wilson said: “Ryanair pilots who are already among the best paid workers in Ireland are now threatening to disrupt the holiday travel plans of thousands of customers over the coming weeks.”

Fórsa national secretary Angela Kirk said: “(The pilots) tell me they feel forced into serving notice of potentially-disruptive industrial action by a company that seems either unwilling or unable to negotiate in a professional, transparent and constructive manner."
