Ryan Tubridy mistake makes viewers call him out for Late Late show gaffe

Viewers and RTE's social media themselves have called out Ryan Tubridy for mistaking what the term "shift" actually means.

In a segment on last Friday's show, Ant and Dec were challenged by Ryan to guess what a load of Irish slang terms really mean.

One that the UK hosts didn't have a clue about was the term "shifting".

And in Ryan's options he stated: "Kissing maybe your distant cousin."

The lads guessed both shifting turf and changing your gear but were in hysterics when the answer was kissing your cousin.

However, viewers and now even the Late Late Show official Twitter account have called out the host for the mistake.

Shifting does not in fact mean kissing your cousin but kissing in general.

Or as Urban Dictionary would put it: "The term for sticking ones tongue down ones throat aggressively."

The official Late Late account even tweeted on Wednesday: "Shifting' does *not* mean kissing your distant cousin, Ryan."

Many fans also worried last week that Ant and Dec would go away from the show fearing Irish people were frequently kissing their cousins.

One viewer said: "What just happened?? Ant and Dec away thinking shifting is an Irish term for kissing your cousin."

Another said: "Someone needs to explain “shifting” to Tubs. Ant and Dec it does NOT mean kissing your cousin!!! It’s snogging in general."

Hopefully they get the message.
