Doctor Odyssey has been a delightful addition to the Ryan Murphy television universe. So why is he not making season 2 a priority? With season 1 coming to an end, fans want to know what’s on the horizon for Max, Avery, Tristan and the rest of the crew.
The back and forth over a season 2 renewal is, reportedly, not on the network. Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich spoke with TV Line about the upcoming ABC slate and a hot topic was whether or not fans would have another season of the seafaring adventure. According to Erwich, it isn’t up to them but is, instead, in the hands of Ryan Murphy.
“Doctor Odyssey is not on our schedule currently,” Erwich said. But he went on to say that they’re already talking with Murphy about the future of the show and where the next season could potentially take the Odyssey. “We’re in talks with [series crearor] Ryan [Murphy], and we really look to him about what the next chapter might be.”
The issue is that Murphy is a busy man and has a lot of shows all moving forward at the same time. “Ryan’s extremely busy,” Erwich said, going on to talk about some of Murphy’s projects. “9-1-1, [the upcoming spinoff] 9-1-1: Nashville… he’s doing All’s Fair [for Hulu], I know he’s working on a bunch of shows for FX that they’re really excited about, too….”
Disney TV Studios Chief Eric Schrier did an interview with Deadline where he was a bit more straight forward on the show. “That decision ultimately lies with Ryan Murphy,” Schrier said, “whether Ryan wants to continue to do it, and he feels like there’s stories to tell that he feels confident in.”
Ryan Murphy should make Doctor Odyssey his most important venture

I have been a “fan” of Murphy’s since Nip/Tuck. I say fan because sometimes, I feel an obligation to watching his work when it is a show I might not otherwise have an interest in. Doctor Odyssey felt like a gasp of fresh air because I enjoyed every moment of it and wanted to watch it each week. It never felt like I was being forced into watching it.
So the fact that this show felt like something I could enjoy for seasons to come, it makes me a little mad that Murphy is, seemingly, not making it his priority. I think he should be working on season 2 before some of his other projects.
His FX series are hit or miss for me. Some of them are great, others are a bit more outrageous. The Monsters series feels unnecessary but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t interested in his take on Ed Gein. And I don’t particularly want to see Kim Kardashian continue to try to be an actor and yet that’s what is being pushed forward while we still don’t know about Doctor Odyssey.
I hope that this is jus a momentary hold and Murphy will be on board for season 2 but until then, please take this plea and bring me back my ship doctors!
