Ryan Mason to be without Tottenham youngster for the rest of the season after international call

Tottenham duo Alfie Devine and Dane Scarlett have been called up to represent England at this year's FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Members of the Three Lions squad that won the Under-19 European Championships last summer following their 3-1 triumph over Israel in the showpiece finale, both will be hoping to make it back-to-back successes representing their country. This year's FIFA Under-20 World Cup takes places in Argentina, with the tournament getting underway on Saturday, May 20.

England have been drawn in Group E alongside Uruguay, Iraq and Tunisia. Starting their campaign on Monday, May 22 against Tunisia, they then face Uruguay three days later before playing Iraq in their final group game on Sunday, May 28.

The top two sides in the group will advance to the Round of 16, with four of the best third-place finishers from the six groups also making it through to the knockout stages. The highly-rated Tottenham youngsters will link up with the rest of the England squad this weekend as Ian Foster's side begin their preparations for the tournament in South America.

That in turn means that Devine, who trains with the Spurs first team at Hotspur Way on a full-time basis, will no longer be available to Ryan Mason for the remainder of the 2022/23 season. Getting some more first-team action under his belt at the turn of the year as he came on in the dying minutes of the 1-0 FA Cup victory over Portsmouth, the 18-year-old has featured regularly on the bench of late.

Named in the squad in four successive games after coming into the 20-man matchday party for the away game at Everton at the start of April, Devine was not included for the 2-2 draw against Manchester United for Mason's first game in charge but he returned the following game against Liverpool.

Getting his opportunity in the squad due to a number of injuries hitting the first team, things have improved on the injury front over the past week, with Emerson Royal returning to the starting XI vs Crystal Palace after his recent injury and Yves Bissouma also making the squad for the first time in three months after undergoing surgery on his ankle in February.

Whereas Devine has mainly featured in Premier League 2 this campaign, chipping in with two goals and three assists in 17 games in the process, Scarlett spent the season in League One with Portsmouth. The striker's minutes did dry up towards the end of the campaign following a change in management but he made 40 appearances in total for the south coast club, scoring six times during his spell at Fratton Park.
