Ryan Mason and Tottenham's next manager have just discovered a welcome surprise after Wolves win

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has already demonstrated this season that he has an eye for a killer pass.

A player who will put his foot in and do the dirty work in midfield to try and get Tottenham on the ball and up the pitch, it's usually down to the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso to provide the magic in the middle to open things up for Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

In total control against Wolves on Sunday but unable to make the crucial breakthrough just prior to the break, the Dane produced a moment of magic with time running out to play Kane in on goal.

On the ball inside his own half, the 25-year-old spotted the striker's run and played a sumptuous ball between Conor Coady and Romain Saiss that the England captain finished off in style.

Praised earlier in the season for his excellent assists in the wins over Manchester United and West Brom, his latest one was just as good as he notched his fifth of the campaign.

That wasn't the end of Hojbjerg's contribution on proceedings as he then gave Spurs a two-goal cushion just past the hour mark as he beat Coady to the ball six yards out to net beyond Rui Patricio.

Showing his determination and desire in midfield all season for Tottenham, that was there for all to see as he reacted quickest to score after Gareth Bale's effort had been palmed out into his path.

Ryan Mason hailed Hojbjerg's performance when speaking after the game, although he questioned why exactly the holding midfielder was in the six-yard box as he fired in his second of the season.

"Pierre has had a very good season for this football club," the interim head coach told football.london in his post-match press conference. "I'm not too sure what he's doing in the six yard box to be perfectly honest but he felt it was right and that came from an excellent piece of play from Reggy as well.

"The desire never to give up and to compete for every single ball and that's what can happen, you can create chances from that.

"So very pleasing performance from Pierre. Not just his goal and assist but overall I thought he helped the team and everyone collectively was very good today."

Making such a huge impact at the start of the season as he excelled in midfield under Jose Mourinho, the Denmark international's sky-high levels have dipped since the turn of the year, as has been the case with the Tottenham team as a whole.

However, that's understandable given he's played every single minute of all 36 Premier League games so far this season, as well as the fact he was used more than Mourinho would have ideally liked in cup competition as he quickly realised just how integral the Dane was to his side.

Next campaign the player will hopefully be able to maintain his levels over a longer period due to Oliver Skipp's return to the club from Norwich City.

An option in midfield to give the Dane a rest every now and again, the England U21 international could also drive his teammate to a whole new level given he may well be pushing for a regular starting spot after such a good season at Carrow Road.

One thing for sure is that Hojbjerg will continue to be a key player for Tottenham's next boss, with the ex-Southampton man showing on Sunday that he can more than play his part in the final third for the team.

Numbers are always welcome from midfield and the Copenhagen-born player currently has the most assists he's registered in a season since his switch to England back in 2016.

His goal tally may not always be high due to his role in the Spurs team, but he most definitely has the ability to get on the scoresheet every now and then.

Tottenham's next manager certainly won't be complaining if he can pop up in and around the area with a few more vital goals next season.
