Ryan Gosling voices disappointment over Gerwig and Robbie Oscar snubs

Oppenheimer leads with 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Film and Best Director.

In a surprising turn of events, the Oscar nominations for this year have left many scratching their heads. While the critically acclaimed film Oppenheimer secured a staggering 13 nominations, including Best Film and Best Director for Christopher Nolan, another highly anticipated movie, Barbie, received eight nods. However, it's the notable snubs that are causing a stir in the industry.

One of the most significant omissions is Greta Gerwig not receiving a nomination for Best Director for her work on Barbie, even though she was recognized for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside Noah Baumbach. Critics argue that Gerwig's direction was the backbone of the film, creating a vivid and immersive world that captivated audiences. Margot Robbie, who delivered a mesmerizing performance in Barbie, was also overlooked for a Best Actress nomination.

The disappointment surrounding these snubs was expressed by Ryan Gosling, who received a well-deserved nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In a heartfelt statement, Gosling acknowledged the honor of being recognized by his colleagues but stressed the importance of recognizing the contributions of Gerwig and Robbie. He aptly said, 'There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.'

Gosling went on to highlight the immense talent, determination, and brilliance that Gerwig and Robbie brought to their respective roles. Despite working with characters portrayed as mere plastic dolls, their performances left a lasting impact, evoking laughter, stirring emotions, and pushing cultural boundaries. Gosling firmly believed that their work deserved recognition alongside the other deserving nominees.

Although disappointed by the snubs, Gosling made sure to congratulate his fellow nominee, America Ferrera, and everyone else involved in creating the groundbreaking film. Barbie, with its soulful storytelling and groundbreaking portrayal of characters, has pushed the boundaries of what a movie about dolls can achieve. Gosling's words vocalize the sentiment shared by many in the industry.

As the Oscar nominations continue to spark conversations and debates, it is evident that this year's selection has generated mixed reactions. The absence of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie from their respective categories has left many questioning the decision-making process and advocating for more diverse recognition. Only time will tell how these snubs will shape the narrative surrounding the 2023 Oscars.
