Ryan Gauld salary revealed as MLS standout mixes it with Gareth Bale on wage list

Star turn Ryan Gauld is now earning almost as much as Welsh superstar Gareth Bale in the MLS, after he smashed through the £2 million a year barrier, following the disclosure of the players' salaries.

Gauld admitted this week he's accepted being overlooked by Scotland boss Steve Clarke despite an impressive season at Vancouver Whitecaps. And the latest MLS figures revealed that the former Dundee United and Sporting Lisbon forward earned $2.265 million, which converts to £2.01 million in the MLS's annualised average guaranteed compensation.

That figure includes a player's base salary and all signing and guaranteed bonuses annualised over the term of the player's contract and any marketing bonus and agent's fees, but doesn’t include performance bonuses since there’s no guarantee players will hit those bonuses. And that's just short of World Cup -bound Bale 's salary of $2.386 (£2.1m) at Los Angeles FC, after the former Spurs star took a huge pay cut of a reported £27 million to move from Real Madrid to California.

Other Scots' earnings in the MLS include Lewis Morgan at New York Red Bulls, who is on $653,125, Johnny Russell who earns exactly $2 million at Sporting Kansas City and Colorado Rapids' Danny Wilson who is on $354,750.

On loan Rangers star James Sands is on $493,956 at New York FC. However, Gauld is still some way short of the top earner in the league - fellow Canadian side Toronto FC paid Lorenzo Insigne $14 million (£12.36m).
