Ryan Edwards in Alfredo Morelos Rangers injury claim as defender insists he did nothing wrong

Ryan Edwards has insisted that he never went out to deliberately hurt Alfredo Morelos.

The Dundee United defender made a challenge where he won the ball and his follow through caught the Rangers star on the knee.

Morelos was stretchered off with a nasty gash and there was a call for retrospective action to be taken.

The Scottish Football Association’s compliance officer decided not to take action.

Edwards is adamant that was the right decision because he went and won the ball and would never go out to intentionally hurt another fellow player.

Edwards confirmed: “As I have said, I never have and never will go out to try and hurt somebody deliberately.

“I went to take the ball and I have taken the ball.

“There might have been a follow through naturally as your body does but I didn’t see anything wrong and in my opinion it was never worthy of a red card.

“Unfortunately, he went off in pain from the challenge.

“I was made aware of some screenshots of his leg.”

The centre half admitted he is an aggressive player and that is his whole-hearted style.

Edwards insisted: “I see myself as an aggressive player being a defender as well.  “I have not gone in to hurt the lad. “I have gone in strongly to win the ball because that is my job to do.  “I didn’t think it was bad at the time.  “Somebody said he had a nasty gash in his leg that I wasn’t aware of at the time.”

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has since been charged with a notice of complaint for comments he made after the game.
