Rutherglen Glencairn 'did it the hard way' as they book Scottish Junior Cup final place

Rutherglen Glencairn boss Willie Harvey says his side "did it the hard way" as they booked their first Scottish Junior Cup final place since 1975.

Anthony Maguire cancelled out Stewart McConnachie's second-minute opener with five minutes to go at Armadale Thistle's Volunteer Park, putting the game into a shoot-out that Glens won 8-7.

That sets up a final against Cumnock, who beat Glenafton Athletic yesterday.

Delighted Harvey says the win hasn't sunk in yet.

He said: "It feels brilliant. We did it the hard way, lost a goal in the first minute of the game, and for 15 or 20 minutes after that we were all over the place.

"We gradually got ourselves into the game, but in the second half we performed really well, their goalkeeper had a lot of good saves, and you were starting to think 'this is not going to be our day'.

"But we decided to go for it, threw one of our defenders up front, big Ants Maguire, caused them problems, and fortunately got the equaliser and won the game on penalties.

"I felt it was a deserved win, on the second half performance. we upped our game and pace and you could see they were starting to tire. We can play the game at a really high pace, and it caused them problems.

"It hasn't sunk in yet. It will be tomorrow morning before that happens. We're heading back to the club just now where well have a few drinks and a wee bit of a celebration.

"It's amazing to be in the final. It means when you're trying to attract players to the club they see you're capable of getting to Scottish Cup finals, and players want to play in these tournaments.

"It's a massive achievement."
