Rusty's and Blonde Barrel celebrate Pride with rainbow umbrella display

Newcastle is ready to party for Pride as the city gears up to host its biggest LGBT event yet.

Newcastle Pride kicks off tonight and is set to run throughout the weekend, with a huge open air party on the Town Moor and Exhibition Park.

And the city's bars are raring to go and ready for the Rainbow party.

Rusty's and The Blonde Barrel are set for a busy weekend, with thousands heading into Newcastle to celebrate Pride and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, where New York City's LGBT community fought back against a police raid on a LGBT bar.

Of course, no loud and proud night out in Newcastle is complete without dropping into Rusty's.

The bar - in Newcastle's 'Times Square' - has added a special tribute to celebrate Stonewall's 50th anniversary and Newcastle Pride 2019.

A series of rainbow-coloured umbrellas are hung up over the bars' outside area. Rainbow flags were first flown at San Francisco's Gay Freedom Day Parade in 1978. Rainbow Pride flags have since become a symbol of the LGBT community and support for it.

Umbrellas are of course also useful for rain - which we hope stays away this weekend !
