Prominent Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has died while in prison, according to the country's prison service. Navalny, who was 47 years old, had been serving a 19-year prison sentence on charges of extremism at a penal colony located near the Arctic Circle. The cause of his death remains unknown.
Navalny rose to prominence in 2008 as a blogger and lawyer-turned-opposition politician and anti-corruption campaigner. His relentless criticism of the Russian government and President Vladimir Putin made him a thorn in the Kremlin's side. He gained national attention by exposing corruption in state-owned corporations and later led mass protests following allegations of fraud in parliamentary elections.
Over the years, Navalny faced multiple arrests and legal challenges. In 2013, he was convicted of embezzlement charges just as he was preparing to run for mayor of Moscow. Although he denied the charges and called them politically motivated, he ultimately lost the mayoral election. In 2017, a retrial prevented him from running for president against Vladimir Putin.

In August 2020, Navalny fell seriously ill during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow and was later found to have been poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok. Amid international pressure, he was allowed to travel to Germany for life-saving treatment. An investigation by Bellingcat revealed that he had been under surveillance by FSB agents, the Russian security service. The Kremlin denied any involvement in the poisoning.
Despite the assassination attempt and its aftermath, Navalny continued his fight against the Russian government. During his recovery in Germany, he conducted a sting operation against an FSB agent, in which the agent revealed details about the poisoning. Navalny also made headlines by releasing a video exposing what his team claimed to be Putin's billion-dollar palace on the Black Sea. Putin denied any ownership of the property.
In January 2021, Navalny returned to Moscow and was immediately arrested for violating probation terms from a previous case. While in prison, he went on a hunger strike to protest against the denial of proper medical care. His death has sparked international outrage and calls for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his demise.
