Russian oil chief and critic of Putin's invasion dies after 'falling from hospital window'

A Russian oil giant has died in mysterious circumstances - with some reports that he passed away after falling from a hospital window.

Ravil Maganov, chairman of Lukoil and one of the most high-profile business executives, was pronounced dead on Thursday, with Russian media saying that he was being treated at Moscow's Central Clinical Hospital and died of his injuries.

Days after Russia invaded Ukraine, the Lukoil board called for the conflict to end , expressing its sympathy to victims of "this tragedy".

Police have said they were working at the scene to establish how he died.

The Tass news agency quoted sources saying he had fallen out of a sixth-floor window early on Thursday morning, adding later that he had taken his own life.

Lukoil is Russia's biggest private company, and paid tribute to Maganov in its statement.

He began working for the private oil company in 1993 and took over as chairman in 2020 - one year after he was honoured with a lifetime achievement award by Vladimir Putin.

Three years ago he was given a lifetime achievement award by President Vladimir Putin.

Maganov had been receiving treatment at a hospital on the outskirts of Moscow, known for having Russia's political and business bigwigs among its patients.

Earlier this week, Mikhail Gorbachev died after treatment at the same hospital.
