Russia 'to be suspended' by UEFA after outrageous push to rival UK and Ireland for Euro 2028

UEFA are reportedly set to suspend Russia following their controversial push to host Euro 2028.

The Russian Football Union expressed interest in rivalling the UK and Ireland for the tournament on Wednesday and insisted they should not be locked out over the war in Ukraine.

FIFA have already blocked the Russian national team from playing in this week's World Cup 2022 play-offs amid Vladimir Putin's horrifying invasion.

The UK and Ireland's pitch to co-host the competition was unexpected to be unopposed until late announcements from Russia and Turkey.

But the Daily Mail report UEFA are unimpressed by the RFU's declaration and are ready to follow FIFA in issuing a suspension which would make Russia ineligible to bid.

It's said European football bosses had expected the UK and Ireland to be awarded the tournament unopposed and could have formalised their host status as early as April.

But if Turkey follow up their interest with a formal bid the decision could be delayed until 2023.

The UK and Ireland remain favourites, however, in a move that could bring another major tournament to Scotland after Hampden staged matches during Euro 2020.
