Rules of Summer is Shaun Tan's latest unusual picture book. It is a picture book which many students at our school have loved reading, or loved having it read to them by teachers or parents. Don't be put-off by the word 'unusual'. This is what Shaun Tan does very well.
What's so unusual about this picture book? Is it good unusual or bad unusual? It's not a regular narrative. Each page is an illustrated rule of summer, or what happens when that rule is broken. When a rule is broken, it can be a bit scary, kind of funny, and totally bizarre.
Shaun Tan's books are really his amazing imagination running around like crazy. Rules of Summer is another look at how Shaun Tan's brain remembers being a kid, and mixes it with being an adult and an artist. This is an amazing picture book for all ages, but maybe the older the better.
