Rugby: East Kilbride gaffer Steel not giving up on title yet

East Kilbride Rugby Club suffered a damaging defeat away to Allan Glens, but boss Allan Steel isn’t giving up hope of landing the West Region League One title.

Glens gained their revenge for December’s shield final defeat to EK, winning 24-8 at the Bearyards on Saturday.

It leaves Steel’s side sixth in the table and 12 points off leaders Kilmarnock.

“We’ve still got plenty of games to play, so I wouldn’t cut us off just yet,” said Steel.

“Yes, we’ve made it harder four ourselves, but we still need to play teams above us again, like Allan Glens, and we’ve to play Garnock twice.

“We will need to win every game from now until the end of the season to give us a chance and hope we pick up about 80 per cent of the possible bonus points.”

EK were playing their first game of 2020, while Allan Glens had already had two run outs since the turn of the year.

And Steel, whose side narrowly missed out on the title last season, added: “You could see we hadn’t played in over a month. We were missing tackles we wouldn’t normally and Allan Glens took advantage.

“We were rusty but we made some early changes and that made an impact.

“We got it back to 10-8, but we tried to be too cute in the middle of the park just before half-time and gave them an easy score. That just killed us.”

Tomorrow, EK host Irvine, looking to get back on track. Kick-off at Torrance House is 2pm.
