RTE viewers all asking the same question as new show Smother proves ratings winner

RTE's latest drama appears to have been a massive hit with fans.

Last night, the national broadcaster showed the first episode of its new series 'Smother', which a staggering 450,000 people tuned in for.

According to figures, an average of 398,000 people watched the new drama live on RTÉ One, with a further 54,000 viewers catching up on RTÉ +1.

The episode has now reached Top 3 status on the most streamed shows on the RTE Player.

Many viewers are hailing the programme online, and voicing their excitement over the next installment due to air this weekend, but one question is being asked by many on Twitter - ‘what is going on?’

One viewer took to Twitter to say; “RTÉ asking if we've been affected by anything in Smother to contact the helpline - Hi yes can I have help figuring out what's going on?”

While another wrote; “Torn between utter confusion of the number of characters and the head-spinning "that's yer man from, that's yer wan from" recognition on Smother.”

Some fans are calling for a “full family tree” to be released so viewers can keep up with the drama and characters, but despite the confusion, the general consensus is that it’s a must-watch.

According to RTÉ, the show was written by Kate O'Riordan, best known for Mr. Selfridge, and the upcoming Channel 5 drama Penance.

The drama is a family thriller about deeply buried secrets and their unintended consequences, set in a small town on the wild and rugged coast of Clare.

Shooting locations included Lahinch, Liscannor, Spanish Point, Fanore, Ennistymon, and Lisdoonvarna.

Episode One is available on the RTÉ Player now, and episode 2 will air next Sunday, March 14 at 9.30 pm.
