RTE's Joe Duffy hears of 'terrifying' Bus Eireann trip as bus ran red light before wing mirror smash

RTE's Liveline listeners were left shocked by one caller's story as he described what Joe Duffy called a 'horror story' of a bus journey.

The man began his journey on a Bus Eireann at approximately 5.45pm Tuesday evening when the event unfolded.

He said: "I basically got on the bus as normal and carried on my journey. I was bet into my phone as you do be on the bus when I looked up, and I was like, why are we here? And I realised that the bus driver had gone past the turn."

The driver then attempted to do a U-turn on the busy road and headed back in the direction where he could take the correct turn.

The man said: "He stopped at a well-known place and done a three-point turn and carried on to correct his turn if you get me.

He added: "At that point, I went down and I said, I just said 'is everything okay?' and he goes 'yeah I just missed the turn' I said fine you know that happens. So I went back upstairs, and he went through the next roundabout."

The passenger became increasingly worried as the journey went on, and the bus driver failed to stop at a red light.

The man said: "Then at another well-known premises, he continued on through a red light, and that's when I thought there's something not right here."

He said there was approximately ten people seated upstairs on the bus and a number of passengers downstairs.

The man said: "Then when he went through the red light, I said right, so I rang the emergency number that they have on their website, and I was put on hold.

"So eventually I got talking to a guy. I explained what had happened, he said, right, I'm just going to put you on hold again, and I'm gonna find out more about this."

He added: "So in the meantime, we were coming we were now in the city centre and before that actually happened, strangely the bus plunged into darkness.

"It went totally dark black, and this would have been about at this stage quarter to six at night, so it went dark 3 or 4 times."

While the man was on hold, the bus driver continued the route down a well-known Dublin street.

He said: "So I'm on hold, and he comes up a well-known street and knocks the wing mirror off the bus that was pulled in picking up passengers."

He added: "The wing mirror was on the ground."

The man said that when he finally came off hold, the person on the Bus Eireann emergency line told him there was nothing he could do and write an email of complaint.

A Bus Eireann spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: "Bus Éireann is fully investigating incidents on a service between Ratoath and Dublin on Tuesday 16 November 2021.

"We very much regret the negative experience and inconvenience reported by passengers."
