RTE's Doireann Garrihy continues knee recovery as search for Eoghan McDermott replacement goes on

Doireann Garrihy has continued her recovery from a knee injury as the search for Eoghan McDermott's radio replacement goes on.

The injury comes as she thanked fans of her radio breakfast show for their support after a “manic” time presenting solo, after co-presenter Eoghan McDermott, left the station.

She posted today on Instagram: "It was great fun when my locked knee was treated so seriously this day last week. a) A bag of frozen Asian Style Stir Fry and b) a photo op by bae. Loved that for me."

Doireann also joked: "Might pop my other knee out of place for the craic because going outside my 5km for surgery was the kind of buzz I’ve been missing. #levelfive."

She told her Instagram following that her knee problems have been an ongoing issue: "Since I was 15, I have had an issue with my knees where they pop out of place.

“It can happen from exercise or sometimes just from crossing my legs while sitting down.”

The 28-year-old Dubliner revealed she ended up in hospital at the weekend after suffering an accident on the set of her RTE TV show.

The 2FM presenter said the painful incident happened when her knee popped out of place whilst filming The Doireann Project on Friday.

Doireann said earlier this week: “I had booked this week off radio thank god (except for St. Patrick’s Day, Donncha O’Callaghan and I on 2FM Breakfast) but am due to be back filming Tuesday.

“If it pops back into place, I could fully be good as new and able to film for the rest of the week. If not, it’ll probably be a scope. If you’re someone who prays, will you pray for the pop and light a candle for me? Thank you #prayforthepop.”

Unable to force it straight back in, she ended up having to head to St James’s Hospital.

“While filming The Doireann Project on Friday, thefinal scenes of the day, I was sitting in a chair and bent to the side to pick up my script and out popped my knee.

“Most of the time I can pop it straight back in but this time it simply wouldn’t happen.”

Recalling the incident, which resulted in her crying in pain, she said she had to call her boyfriend Paddy Wilson to carry her downstairs and to the car.

The former Podge And Rodge presenter added: “So the crew had to dismantle the set while I sat like this [my leg gets jammed at a 90-degree angle] with my foot resting on a box.

“Tried again to pop it back but no luck… I’ll never live down the mortification of yelping in pain in front of all the crew.

“We were filming upstairs in a house, so Paddy had to come to my rescue and carry me down the stairs.

“Again, I refused to let the crew carry me… I would never be able to look them in the eye professionally again.

“I really thought it would pop back into place when I relaxed in my sleep (with good pain killers) but it didn’t so off to James’s I went yesterday.

“This is the situation… everything was far too tense so it couldn’t be straightened, but they gave me good stuff and a brace and a crutch.”

RTE have confirmed that presenter Eoghan McDermott won't return to the breakfast show on 2fm

In a short statement, RTÉ said that “Eoghan McDermott will not be returning to RTÉ 2FM. His contract is due to expire shortly.

“RTÉ is developing a new direction for the 2FM Breakfast Show which will be revealed in the coming weeks."
