RTE's coverage of Tokyo Olympics reels in more than 2 million viewers

More than 2 million people tuned in to watch coverage of the Tokyo Olympics with RTÉ this summer.

While families and fans weren’t permitted to travel to Tokyo in support of Team Ireland due to Covid regulations, Irish people supported their favourite athletes from home as RTÉ Sport brought the competition into the homes of millions across the country.

Kicking off on July 23, RTÉ’s coverage reached 2.6 million television viewers along with airing 268 hours of radio coverage and 850,000 streams on RTÉ player.

Viewers set their alarms early to tune in to watch Dubliner Kellie Harrington’s gold win on Sunday morning, bringing RTÉ2’s numbers to 193,000 by 6.25am.

RTÉ recorded over 574,000 video streams across it’s website and app throughout Tokyo 2020 and RTÉ Sport had over 13 million views of Olympic content across social media.
