RTE Claire Byrne Live viewers react to emotional special on racism in Ireland

Tonight's episode of Claire Byrne Live hosted an emotional, in-depth discussion on racism in Ireland.

The panel, which included Christine Buckley’s son Conor, former footballer and rugby player Jackie McCarthy-O'Brien, and teacher Emer O’Neill, touched on a wide number of issues during a fascinating hour of discussion.

They talked about their inspirations, with Paul McGrath, Phil Lynott, and Christine Buckley herself mentioned among them.

They each spoke on how they were treated differently, attacked, and trying to laugh along, but also about growing up, accepting and embracing your heritage, and using it as a positive.

They also addressed issues surrounding casual racism, and the importance of having people’s support when you call something out.

Paula Hilman, the Assistant Commissioner from An Garda Síochána, said the Gardai would continue to learn and address issues raised by ethnic minority communities, while a number of Irish footballers, including Darren Randolph, Adam Idah, and Cyrus Christie, spoke about their experiences of racism in their worlds.

And viewers took to social media to share their support for the conversation.
