This weekend, RSPB's annual Big Garden Birdwatch will take place, when thousands of people across the UK spend time counting how many birds they spot in their gardens. Participants provide vital information about British birds and last year alerted conservationists to further declines in numbers of starlings, sparrows and bullfinches. For the first time this year, the RSPB are asking participants to log other wildlife that they spot in their garden too.

To take part, the RSPB are asking you to spend just one hour at any time in your garden or local outside space this weekend and note the highest number of each bird species, at any one time. If you happen to spot any wildlife, such as deer, hedgehogs or toads they would love to know about those too, though you don't have to count them.

We'd like to see your pictures or video of the birds and wildlife that you see this weekend. You can submit by clicking on the blue 'Contribute' button on this page, or if you happen to be out and about, you can download the GuardianWitness app on your smartphone. If you turn your location data on, then we'll know where the photo or video was taken, or use the description box to provide information about the birds and animals you spotted and the time you spotted them.

The RSPB will include your results in their count and we hope to make a gallery of your best pictures on the Guardian site.
