ANTI-monarchy campaign groups have accused the royal family of treating Scotland "as a playground" ahead of their visit to the capital.
The King and Queen are visiting Edinburgh this week for "Royal Week", where they will carry out a series of engagements in the capital.
The King is set to receive a Royal Salute and inspect troops in the gardens of the Palace of Holyroodhouse on Tuesday morning, before taking part in the "Ceremony of the Keys".
Palace of Holyroodhouse He will also preside over an investiture ceremony at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where both he and the Queen will then host guests at a garden party.
It is understood that Camilla is set to visit a charity during the visit, where she will receive an award.
The monarch traditionally spends a week at the Palace of Holyroodhouse every year, in what is known as Holyrood Week or Royal Week in Scotland.
The visit has been condemned by anti-monarchy groups, who called for the royal family to instead use their wealth to make lives better for ordinary Scots.
Graham Smith, CEO of Republic, said the royal family "are an irrelevance to Scotland".
"A few engagements here and there won't change the fact that this is a monarchy that serves the rich and powerful, London and the Home Counties," he told The National.
Smith pointed towards polling from Savanta, commissioned by Republic earlier this year, which showed support for the monarchy falling below 50% for the first time.
"[The poll is] hardly surprising when we see how much money they're spending – an estimated half a billion pounds – at a time when so many are struggling to make ends meet," he added.
Smith continued: "We should all be able to choose our head of state, and hold them to account.
"The problem with the monarchy is it demands we are mere spectators, not proud citizens.
"That doesn't sit well with an increasing number of people either side of the Border."
Meanwhile, Tristan Grayford, co-founder of monarchy abolition campaign group OurRepublic, said the royal family "treats Scotland as a playground".
He told The National: "This week Charles will be welcomed to Edinburgh by his brother, a man he gave the title of ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ to as a birthday present for his 59th. Not even his 60th. Our city’s highest noble title given away as a trinket.
"Charles’s wife Camilla will be visiting a charity, not so she can bestow a part of the Royal couple’s billionaire wealth, but so she can receive a badge from them.
"This is what we are used to. A Royal Family that treats Scotland as a playground where they can share around the honours and titles they award themselves all whilst using our charities as PR opportunities.
"Charles could leverage his billionaire wealth to make a difference this week. That would be truly showing he cares about Scotland and its people.
"But he won’t, because he doesn’t."
