Meghan Markle is once again in the spotlight, and not for reasons she might have hoped. A royal expert has weighed in on the latest move by the Duchess of Sussex, claiming her credibility has taken a serious knock after releasing a video on her daughter Princess Lilibet’s fourth birthday a video that’s raised more than a few eyebrows.
The footage shows Meghan dancing with Prince Harry in a hospital room, clearly heavily pregnant, just hours before Lilibet was born. It was meant as a joyful moment to mark Lili’s birthday, but according to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, it came across as odd and poorly timed.
Speaking to The Express, Fitzwilliams described the clip as a “weird” move that doesn’t do much to help Meghan’s public image, especially in the middle of ongoing confusion about her lifestyle brand As Ever.
The brand, which launched earlier this year with a small collection of home and wellness items, appeared to sell out quickly — though not everyone was convinced it was all genuine demand. Fitzwilliams suggested some sceptics believe the sellout might have been part of a pre-arranged strategy to generate buzz.
Meghan recently told Fast Company that she was taking a pause to reassess things. “I wanted to take a step back, gather data and figure out what As Ever could be,” she said, hinting that she’d return with a fresh range of products sometime next year.
But shortly after that, she announced that the brand would be restocking existing items and introducing some new ones sooner than expected. That sudden change has left commentators like Fitzwilliams questioning what’s really going on behind the scenes.
He didn’t mince his words. “Her handling of her lifestyle brand has been memorably chaotic,” he said. “We were told its first set of products had been sold out, though sceptics wondered if this had been pre-arranged.”
“She then announced a ‘pause’, to enable her to ‘step back’, but now she is apparently ‘restocking’ and launching some new products,” he added. “This gives an impression of a total absence of a serious business plan.”
Then came the birthday video, which only added fuel to the fire. Fitzwilliams said the clip didn’t help Meghan’s credibility and could damage her efforts to be seen as a serious player in the influencer and lifestyle space.
“She also may find that her credibility is affected by the weird ‘twerking video’, released to celebrate Lilibet’s fourth birthday,” he said. “If she wants to be an influencer, she must be taken seriously!”
While fans of Meghan might see the video as a light-hearted moment of family joy, critics argue it clashes with the image she’s trying to build through As Ever. And with the brand’s direction still unclear, it seems the Duchess has some work to do if she wants to win over both customers and critics alike.
