Roy Hodgson makes surprising VAR admission after Liverpool's win at Crystal Palace

Roy Hodgson admits VAR made the right call by disallowing James Tomkins' goal for Crystal Palace against Liverpool.

The Eagles thought they had taken the lead in the first half when Tomkins headed in from a set-piece routine.

However, after several moments checking the goal, VAR official Chris Kavanagh adjudged Jordan Ayew to have pushed Dejan Lovren at the near post and chalked off the strike.

Liverpool went on to win a dramatic match 2-1 at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon to maintain their eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

And when asked for his opinion on the decision, Palace boss Hodgson recalled Arsenal's winner against his team last month that was wiped out for a similar offence.

“I don't want to get involved in those things,” he said.

“The only point I'll make is there has been such a hoohaa about Arsenal's supposed third goal against us that should have been given.

“The foul at the near post in that instance where James McCarthy was completely bundled over, that was a much clearer and worse foul which luckily I think VAR picked up.

“I don't think this (Tomkins) was a mistake by VAR either. There was a foul at the near post, Jordan did unfortunately push Lovren and VAR disallowed the goal.”

Former Liverpool boss Hodgson believes his current side were unfortunate not to take something from what he regards their most impressive display of the campaign.

“It's the usual close but no cigar, isn't it,” he added.

“I would say it was our best performance of the season, we really did play well. We were very pleased at half-time with the performance.

“It is a bitter blow after getting what we thought was a deserved equaliser to concede that second goal with that unfortunate corner kick.

“It's football, you have to learn to live with that. On another day we'd have got something.”
