Rough waves on lake close floating haunted house and other events at Navy Pier

Nov. 01--Officials at Navy Pier have shut down a floating haunted house after violent waves on Lake Michigan damaged the structure.

The attraction, dubbed the Zombie Containment Haunted House, suffered damage Friday afternoon while stationed on the northeast end of Navy Pier. High winds and violent waves caused the barge housing the attraction to slam against the pier, said Nick Shields, the director of external communications at Navy Pier.

According to the Navy Pier website, the attraction was the only floating haunted house operating in the city.

Shields said officials decided to close the attraction for the remainder of Halloween because of safety concerns. He said refunds will be given to anyone who bought tickets online or ahead of opening time for Halloween.

In addition to the floating haunted house, Navy Pier closed the Ferris wheel, Grand Ballroom and the East End Plaza because of the weather. The Chicago's Masquerade Ball and Nightmare at Lakeview Terrace scheduled to take place Friday night in the ballroom has also been canceled, officials said.

All cruises scheduled aboard the Mystic Blue and Spirit of Chicago were also canceled because of the extreme lake conditions. The interior attractions at Navy Pier, shops and restaurants were to remain open until 10 p.m. Friday.
