Makeup artists reveal the nine most iconic red lipsticks of all time

In a recent interview with the iconic makeup artist François Nars (more of which later), he told me “nothing transforms more instantly than a tube of red lipstick. Even with just a white T-shirt and jeans, red lips make you look and feel extraordinary.” And he is right, of course.

Once upon a time, way back when, (one of the better things about getting older, is that I can say this now), I thought that red mouths were for women with teetering stilettos, clutch bags and too much time to get ready. I was not this person. Nor did I want to be. But I have, over the years, come to realise this is certainly not the case.

In reality red lipstick doesn’t care about glamour, or matters of high-maintenance. It simply demands to be worn. If you happen to be sporting baggy jeans and a t-shirt, if you happen to have unbrushed hair, even a baby on your hip, or if your confidence happens to be hanging by a flimsy thread, all the better.

Swipe on that pigment and you’re instantly The One. A leading lady. Just like that.

The secret to success here, (and indeed the only challenging part), lies in finding your perfect match in a market that is over-saturated with options, all begging to be worn. So what better guidance to steer you (and I), than the recommendations of our industry’s finest face painters?

The best red lipsticks — according to makeup artists

Here are the reds recommended by some of my most trusted makeup artist friends and acquaintances, nearly all of them staples in my own makeup kit. You have to give these a go.

Lisa Eldridge True Velvet Lip Colour in Velvet Ribbon as recommended @lisaeldridgemakeup

(Lisa Eldridge)

“My True Velvet Lip Colour in Velvet Ribbon is that one, universally flattering, pillar-box red that works for everyone, which is why it’s become such an iconic, mega fan favourite. The formula also gives you that incredible, plush, saturated colour without feeling too heavy or drying on the lips. And if matte isn’t your thing, these days there’s a Ribbon to suit every taste, so you can get that epic colour in whatever finish you want.” £27 Lisaeldridge.com

MAC Cosmetics Lipstick in Ruby Woo as recommended by @melartermakeup

(MAC Cosmetics)

“I can remember when I came across Ruby Woo; who I was hanging out with, where and what music I was listening to (The Strokes, Hole and The Knife if you were wondering!) It’s just one of those…Like a scent that sparks pure nostalgia. All my friends wore it too. It’s an icon and a classic.” £25 maccosmetics.co.uk

Prada Monochrome Hyper Matte Hyper Matte Lipstick in Fuoco R28 as recommended by @lynseyalexandermakeup

(Prada)

“I designed this as the ultimate red. I wanted that classic, timeless red that goes with everything and everyone.” £40 prada.com

La Bouche Rouge Lipstick in Regal Red as recommended by @wendyrowe

(La Bouche Rouge)

“I developed this lipstick in partnership with La Bouche Rouge. It's a luxurious, sophisticated and bold shade that works beautifully on all skin tones and embodies classic elegance, with its deep, vibrant red hue. I designed it to enhance the natural beauty of the lips, while providing a striking focal point.” £34 (laboucherougeparis.com)

Tom Ford Lip Colour in Scarlet Rouge as recommended by @rachelsingerclark

(Tom Ford)

“I love this lipstick, which has a subtle sheerness and slight satin finish. Not only is it a beautiful red, it also smells divine and comes in a mini size which is perfect for evening handbag touch-ups.” £25 tomfordbeauty.co.uk

Maybelline Superstay Vinyl Ink Long Lasting Lipstick in Lippy as recommended by @lisaeldridgemakeup

(Maybelline)

I recently came across this lipstick and thought it was really good for a High Street red, with great pigment and nice shine.” £11.99 at boots.com

Louboutin Rouge Louboutin Velvet Matte Lipstick in 001 as recommended by @melartermakeup

(Louboutin)

“I believe that this was the original Louboutin lipstick shade and it’s like a full-bodied mature vintage wine. It’s definitely one for grown-ups and it’s crucial that I have it on when I am deciding on an outfit for an event. It brings the glam each time.”£84 christianlouboutin.com

MAC Cosmetics Lipstick in Lady Danger as recommended by @lynseyalexandermakeup

(MAC Cosmetics)

“This will always have a special place in my heart. It’s that mega 50s Hitchcock orangey-red and delivers killer vibes. For me it has that forever cult, iconic status.” £25 maccosmetics.co.uk

Armani Beauty Lip Power Matte in Vibrant 408 as recommended by @wendyrowe

(Armani Beauty)

This is a must-have for anyone looking for red lipstick. It has to be bold. You need to own it! If you're going for red, I think a matte finish is essential, and this lipstick has a great texture. It’s matte but not drying, and has good staying power. It delivers beautifully and features a slightly blue undertone that complements various skin tones. I love to mix it with La Bouche Rouge's Regal Red, using the Armani as a base to keep the edges deep and rich, before applying La Bouche Rouge in the centre of the mouth to add dimension and fullness. This combination not only enhances the vibrancy of your lips but also creates a stunning, full look that’s both elegant and eye-catching.” £38 armanibeauty.co.uk
