Rosie O'Donnell found shooting her And Just Like That... sex scene with Cynthia Nixon "horrifying".
The 64-year-old actress made a guest appearance in the third season of the Sex and the City spin-off as Sister Mary, a nun who breaks her vow of chastity to lose her virginity to Cynthia's character Miranda Hobbes, and the comic admitted she was "so nervous" about filming the intimate moment with her good friend.
Speaking to Amy Poehler on her Good Hang podcast, she said: “I was so nervous.
“The kissing wasn’t hard, but the laying in bed and the wanting us to act like we had just done it. I was like, ‘Uhh.’ But I’m a little immature when it comes to that.”
Amy replied: “I don’t even think that’s immature. I’ve talked to a lot of my friends who have to do intimate scenes, and it’s a skill.”
Rosie agreed: It’s a skill. It really is.”
Cynthia had called her friend to offer her the role and Rosie accepted instantly, without realising what it would involve.
She said: “First of all, I love her. Like, I love her. I have so much respect for her.
“She called me, and she’s like, ‘Ro, Michael Patrick [King] wrote you a scene, and it’s with me. Will you do it?’ I said, ‘Of course I’ll do it with you.'
“Then, I read it, and I’m in bed with just the sheets. I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’ ”
The A League of Their Own star explained she had only previously filmed one other sex scene, when she had a guest role in Nip/Tuck opposite the late Julian McMahon.
She added: “So I was nervous with Cynthia. And then Michael said, ‘You guys can be a little bit more.’ And I’m thinking, ‘I can’t really.’”
Rosie admitted she has huge admiration for 60-year-old Cynthia because of the way she isn't afraid to stand up for what she believes in.
She said: “She is the real deal. Period. End of subject.
“She’s one of the best actresses that we have. She stands up for injustice wherever she sees it. She puts her money where her mouth is. She loves her children and her wife. I admire her greatly.”
