Rory McIlroy throws club after wayward drive at The Open

Rory McIlroy lost his cool as he drove a wayward shot into the rough during Saturday's Open Championship.

The Holywood golfer was playing catch-up as he started his third round on level par, some 11 shots off leader Louis Oosthuizen.

McIlroy started the day well, firing four-under during the opening nine holes, including five birdies and one bogey.

But it started to unravel for McIlroy in the back nine, with the world number 11 dropping shots at the 11th, 13th and 15th to complete a one-under-par round of 69.

That leaves McIlroy on one-under for the tournament, with his Open dream gone for another year.

It was at the 14th hole where McIlroy's frustrations got the better of him.

His drive with a three iron hooked into the rough down the left, and it was enough to force McIlroy to throw his club in anger down the tee box.

Some of the early movers on Saturday included American Kevin Streelman who shot a four-under round of 66 to sit on five-under for the tournament, while Scottish golfer Robert McIntyre managed one better on five-under for his round, and four under for the Open.
