Rory McIlroy returns to action following US PGA Championship disappointment

Rory McIlroy is set to make his first start since his PGA Championship disappointment as he competes at the Memorial Tournament.

McIlroy has never won the Jack Nicklaus hosted event and will be hoping to get back into the winners circle.

The four-time major winner has not won since late last year but has shown some good recent form with three top 10 finishes in a row.

But it will be the first appearance for McIlroy since his US PGA heartbreak.

The two-time winner was the first round leader but a third round four over par all but sent McIlroy out of contention.

And the former world number one fired back on the final day to finish eight and was just three shots off a play off.

And McIlroy will hope to dust himself down as the US Open looms later this month.

And the former world number one said of his disappointment: "I definitely feel like it was one that got away. But, again, I have to take the positives – and the fact that eighth place in a Major is absolutely the worst I feel I could've finished last week."

McIlroy will tee off alongside Patrick Reed and Hideki Matsuyama at 6pm Irish time.
