Ronny Deila handed post Celtic return to Europe as Standard Liege see off Blackburn Rovers interest

Ronny Deila is set to be appointed the new manager of Standard Liege after agreeing to leave his role in the United States.

And he will appoint ex- Celtic flop Efrain Juarez as his assistant manager in Belgium.

The ex-Hoops boss is in charge of New York City and led them to their first-ever MLS Cup win in December.

But ambitious Belgian club Standard have new American owners and made Deila their No.1 choice for the job, on the recommendation of new sports director, former Manchester City loans and pathway manager Fergal Harkin, who Deila once revealed helped put him in for the Celtic job in 2014.

New York were determined to keep the 46-year-old, but Deila made clear he wanted to accept the challenge of returning to Europe and managing in Belgium, despite strong interest from Blackburn Rovers after Tony Mowbray’s departure.

And he will take one of his assistants - ex-Mexican international Juarez, who was a £2 million expensive disaster for Celtic - as his No.2.

Standard endured a miserable season where they finished 14th and only just beat the drop.

But they have pledged a complete rehaul of the playing squad in a bid to challenge for the title next season.

And Deila is expected to take charge in time for their return to pre-season training this week.
