Ron Bushy dead: Iron Butterfly drummer dies at 79 after battle with cancer

Iron Butterfly drummer Ron Bushy has died.

The musician lost his battle with esophageal cancer at the age of 79, TMZ reports.

His loved ones were by his side when he died at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles this morning.

Ron was the only member of Iron Butterfly to appear on all six of their albums.

He's perhaps best known for his iconic drum solo in 1968 hit In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

The track is famous for being a whopping 17 minutes long, and Ron takes the lead on the drums for around two to three minutes.

The drummer helped the band record their next three albums into the 1970s, before the band decided to take a break.

They got back together in 1974 to release albums five and six.

They then continued playing together into the 1980s, before a second break up and yet another reconciliation.

Iron Butterfly went through an enormous amount of line up changes throughout the 70s and 80s, with Ron remaining the only constant, keeping the band going through their studio sessions and tours.

Ron played in other bands during his music career too, including groups Magic and Gold.

He retired from performing in the mid 2010s due to health concerns.

However he did still make the odd guest appearance with the new line up of the band in the years following his retirement.

Ron is survived by his wife Nancy and their three daughters.

Iron Butterfly are still together today.
